What Are Matric Equivalent Courses?
Matric Equivalent Courses are designed as alternative courses for students who want a course that is at NQF Level 4. An NQF Level 4 qualification is equivalent to a Matric Certificate. For most students in South Africa, a Matric Certificate or Matric Equivalent Certificate is the start of an exciting career.
Most of the courses that we offer can be completed with any Matric Pass Level or a Matric Equivalent Certificate. Here are the two Matric Equivalent Courses that we offer:
- Senior Bookkeeping: ICB Further Education and Training Certificate
- Small Business Financial Management: ICB National Certificate
If you are interested in completing your Matric the traditional way and you are 21 or older, you can apply for our Adult Matric Course. This course covers Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12. To apply you only need the following entry requirements:
- Have a Grade 9 or Grade 9 Equivalent (ABET Level 4)
- Be 21 or older. You can apply at the age of 19 but you must be 21 when you write the exam.
- Understand, read and write English or Afrikaans
- Study through distance learning
A Matric Certificate allows students to do the following:
- Go to university
- Most universities require students to have a Bachelor’s Degree Matric Pass Level. However, some universities allow admission with a Diploma Matric Pass Level.
- Your APS Score
- The subjects you chose in Matric
- Find entry-level work
You can start working once you have completed any Matric Qualification. Here are the type of jobs you can apply for:- Data Capturer
- Call Centre Agent
- Bank Teller
- Apply for an Internship
An internship is a great opportunity for students to gain work experience while earning a salary. Students can decide whether or not they would like to further their studies in that particular field. Some employers offer full-time employment after students have completed their internships.
- Go to university
What Happens If You Fail Matric?
If you fail Matric, you will not receive a Matric Certificate. However, you will get a statement of results that indicate the subject that you have failed or the subjects that you have not written in the final Matric exam. Here are your two options:
At Matric College, we have over 30 courses you can study without a Matric Certificate.
You can complete the Matric Upgrade Course at Matric College or the supplementary exam with the Department of Basic Education.
Here is the difference between the two:
Matric Upgrade Course | Supplementary Exam |
You have to be 21 or older to apply. | You can be 21 and younger to apply. |
You can register any time of the year. | You can only apply after you have received your results for your final Matric exam. This is between the end of January till mid-March. This varies each year. |
You can change your subjects to easier ones. | You have to write about the subjects you wrote in the previous exam. |
If you think that you should have passed Matric, here are your options:
- Recheck your paper
In this case, the examiner will mark your paper again. This will be marked like it has never been marked before. This is to determine whether or not the paper was marked incorrectly.
- Remark your paper
In this case, the marker will check to see if all of your answers were marked and if the marks were added correctly.
- View your paper
In this case, you can view your paper to see what it looks like. You can only do this once you have remarked and rechecked your marks.
NOTE:
A recheck, remark and viewing your paper will not drastically change your marks. These processes are only used if you truly believe that you should have passed or gotten more marks for that particular subject.
Apply for our Matric Upgrade course and improve your marks drastically.
Can I Get A Job Without A Matric Certificate?
Yes, you can get a job without a Matric Certificate. This depends on the type of job you are applying for. For example, if you want to become a Bookkeeper, some companies will allow you to apply without a Matric Certificate and are willing to train you, whereas other companies require you to have a qualification in bookkeeping.
Can You Buy Your Matric?
No, you cannot buy a Matric Certificate. This is an illegal offence and you can be criminally charged. If you do know of someone that is selling a Matric Certificate, you should report it. Here is the only time you can apply and pay for a new Matric Certificate:
- If you have lost or damaged your Matric Certificate
- If you need to combine your two Matric Certificates
NOTE:
You can only apply for the above-mentioned Matric Certificates if you have already passed and received your Matric Certificate
Can I Study For A Degree Without Matric?
No, you cannot study for a Degree without a Matric Certificate, you can only apply with a Matric Certificate. To apply for a Degree course you have to consider the following factors:
- Your APS Score
This could be for the university itself and the course you apply for. E.g you might gain admission to the university but not for the course you would like to complete.
- Your Matric Pass Levels
Some universities, if not most, only accept a Bachelor’s Degree Matric Pass Level.
- The subject you choose in high school
Some universities look at the subjects you had in high school. For example, they prefer Mathematics over Mathematical Literacy.
- The percentages you received
Although you have the subjects, APS Score OR matric Pass Level, the university might still require a particular percentage for a subject. Find below an example of this:
Your Matric Results | What the university expects |
Total APS Score of 37 | Total APS Score of 35 |
60% For Mathematics | 75% for Mathematics |
80% for English | 60% for English |
This ultimately means that the student will not gain entry for the particular course because he/she received 60% for Mathematics instead of 75% for Mathematics. In this case, students can complete our Matric Upgrade course.

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) unique assessment criteria are designed to maximize your chances of success. As you complete each subject, you will be required to submit a Portfolio of Evidence and the final exams.
Taking the exams counts for 70% of your final grade, so you might be able to pass with flying colours. 30% of your grade will come from your assignments and internal tests.
Portfolio Of Evidence
Your Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) is what determines whether or not you are prepared for the exams. The PoE consists of 3 Formative Assignments and two tests. You have to complete the PoE to gain entry to the exams.
Exams
ICB has two types of exams, namely:
- Online Exams
- Paper-based Exams
ICB offers these options to students because they realise that each student has different preferences, and because of COVID protocols they have decided to go online with their exams.
Although many students were at first hesitant about the online exams, students started preferring online exams to paper-based exams.
Online Exams
Online exams are a perfect option for students who prefer to study from home but this option is not limited to distance learning students only. Face-to-face students can also choose this option but have to make sure with their College before applying for the online exams.
Online exams are between 01:00 pm – 04:30 pm. If you are a distance learning student, you can apply and pay for the exam registration on the ICB Student Portal. Face-to-face students can apply via their College.
Paper-Based Exams
Paper-based exams are the “regular exams” that are completed at a specified venue. Distance learning students can also book for these exams online.
Paper-based exams are between 09:00 am – 12:30 pm. If you are a distance learning student, you can apply and pay for the exam registration on the ICB Student Portal.
ICB venues (paper-based exams) can only accommodate a limited number of students due to COVID-19 protocols. Book your paper-based exam early to avoid disappointment.
Also NOTE:
ICB can cancel or withdraw any exams and/or venues at any time. Getting accepted into any exam booking by ICB does not guarantee the exam sitting. Students who are affected by cancelled exams will be offered alternative exam dates.
If your results are approved by ICB for Graduation, ICB will direct FASSET to print your certificate. After that, FASSET will prepare your certificate and send it to Matric College. We will then send your Certificate to you via courier.
This process can take between 3 – 6 Months.
