Small Businesses need financial management for several reasons:

  • This is a reminder of what the Small Business goals are
  • It allows small businesses to see and understand their profits
  • A small business can use Business Management to set prices and plan inventory
  • Business Management affects the profitability of a small business
  • Financial decisions can affect a business in various ways

A Higher Certificate in general refers to study programmes that are primarily vocational in nature. This means that the course will focus on the practical skills you will learn to improve your performance at work.

As far as the ICB Office Administration – Business Management course is concerned, a Higher Certificate indicates that the student knows more than the basics of Business Management. It indicates an Intermediate level of understanding.

In other words, the student can obtain an advanced certificate to further their studies. As part of the ICB Business Management Programme, you can complete a Diploma course in the Business Management Programme, Office Administration Programme, or at a university.

NOTE:

Universities have their own admissions requirements and separate requirements for each of their courses.

E.g. you may gain admission to the university, but not the course you want to pursue.

A Diploma in Financial Accounting can either be at NQF Level 5 or NQF Level 6. This is determined by the number of credits earned.

The Diploma in Financial Accounting equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to begin a career in accounting. This course is also a stepping stone to becoming an accountant.

*Remember that there are many steps you need to take before you can become an Accountant.

No, you cannot become a Chartered Accountant with a Diploma in Accounting. You must complete a Chartered Accountant Degree. An Accounting Diploma can help you achieve your goal of becoming a Chartered Accountant. You can apply to a university for a Diploma course and then for a Chartered Accountant Degree course.

NOTE:
Each university has its own entry requirements and separate entry requirements for its courses.

Yes, a Diploma in Financial Accounting is useful. The skills you learn in a Diploma in Financial Accounting can be applied to any industry because they are transferable. Throughout the course, you will develop analytical skills and learn how to deal with common workplace scenarios.

The main differences between the two Diplomas are the purpose and exit-level outcomes. Despite this, both Diplomas are on the same NQF Level, which is 6. It does not mean they are equivalent to one another.

Here are the main differences between these two Diploma’s:

 National N DiplomaNational Diploma
Course DurationBetween 6 months and 4 yearsBetween 1 and 3 years
Designed byThe Department of Higher Education and TrainingThe College or University
ComponentsHas both a practical and theoretical componentOnly has a theoretical component
Awards achievedYour awards are broken down into parts. N1, N2, N3, N4, N5, and N6You only get one award or qualification

In both industries, compensation is good. Your salary depends on the following factors:

  • Educational background
  • Level of experience
  • The position you apply for

NOTE:
There are different hiring criteria at each company. Despite the above factors, the employer still has the final say in who he/she hires. The employer can also decide how much they would like to pay you.

As an example, one company may pay its Loan Consultant R 20 000 per month while another may pay an Assistant Accountant R 15 000 per month.

The company may not be concerned with the factors above, but rather with what the company can afford to pay its employees.
