Matric

Matric

Matric is your final year of high school in South Africa. The final exam is called the “matric exams”. This exam is administered by the Department of Basic Education. Students that complete their final year of high school (Grade 12) are also called “matriculants” OR more commonly referred to as matrics.

Once students have completed their final year and have passed, students are said to have “matriculated”. The qualification received after completing high school is called a National Senior Certificate or a matric certificate. This certificate can be completed through the Department of Basic Education or the Independent Examinations Board.

Here is what the matric certificate is referred to:

All of these certificates are done differently BUT are ultimately all accredited by Umalusi. The table below displays the different certificates you can receive from Umalusi.

What Is A Matric Certificate?

A Matric Certificate is awarded to students who have completed Grades 10, 11 and 12. This certificate can be a National Senior Certificate OR a Senior Certificate (Amended)

National Senior Certificate

A National Senior Certificate (NSC) is usually completed when you are still in high school in South Africa. This year is commonly referred to as the “matric year” OR “Grade 12 year”. Students use this certificate to apply for entry-level jobs and to further their students.

Entry Requirements

  • Must have completed Grade 11
  • Must be 21 and younger

Remember that each university has its own requirements and its courses also have specific requirements. This applies to different employers as well.

How Long Does It Take To Complete A Matric Certificate?

It takes between 5 years to complete your Matric Certificate. For students that fail grades in between, it can take between 5-10 years to complete their matric.

How Long Do Schools Keep Matric Certificates In South Africa?

Schools keep Matric Certificates for 3 months to a year depending on the school. After this time, the school will send the Matric Certificate to the Department of Education.

You have to put in a request for your certificate and this will take between 4-8 weeks to be delivered.

*Get your certificate when the school announces that it is ready for collection to avoid having to put in a request for your Matric Certificate.

Senior Certificate (Amended)

The Senior Certificate (Amended) is completed when you are an adult. It is most commonly referred to as a Senior Certificate OR the Adult Matric Certificate. This certificate is given to students who have not completed their matric OR want to improve their matric marks.

After receiving your Senior Certificate (Amended) you can further your studies OR apply for entry-level jobs.

Remember that each university has its own requirements and its courses also have specific requirements. This applies to different employers as well.

What Is “Amended” Matric?

When we refer to “amended” in terms of a Senior Certificate we refer to these two things:

  1. Syllabus
  2. Entry Requirements

The amendment was created by the Minister of Education that was then gazetted by the government.

The “amendment” should NOT be confused with making changes to your old marks. Your old marks will remain the same. The improved marks will replace the old marks.

Syllabus

The syllabus was amended in the following ways:

  • A new educational system
  • Removing the (HG) Higher Grade and (SG) Standard Grade system as well as,
  • Not including Life Orientation as a subject in the Adult Matric course

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements have changed to the following:

What Is The Difference Between ABET and Matric?

ABET and Matric are often confused with one another. ABET Level 4 is an NQF Level 1 qualification and Matric is an NQF Level 4 qualification.

An ABET Level 4 allows you to complete your Matric. It is the minimum requirement to start the Adult Matric course.

Here are the ABET Levels explained more in-depth

ABET Levels explained by Matric College

Can I Go To University With ABET Level 4?

No, you cannot go to university with an ABET Level 4 because it is on an NQF Level 1. You can only go to university with a National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate (Amended) which is on an NQF Level 4. You also have to pass with a Bachelor’s Degree pass.

*Remember that even if you pass with a Bachelor’s Degree, each university still has its own requirements and the courses also have separate requirements.

A Grade 9 Certificate

This is when you have not completed your matric and want to do so as an adult. You can complete this course and receive a Senior Certificate (Amended).

For example, you can apply for the Adult Matric course if you have only completed Grade 9, 10 or 11.

A Grade 12 Certificate

If you have already completed your matric, whether it be a pass or a fail you can upgrade your marks and receive a Senior Certificate (Amended).

For example, you have passed matric BUT failed one or more subjects OR you have passed matric BUT want to improve some of your marks.

Matric Upgrade

A Matric Upgrade course can be completed if students are unhappy with their final matric results and want to improve or change their subjects. Students can also complete this course if they have failed matric.

Entry Requirements

  • You must be at least 21 or older to register for this course
  • You must have completed your matric. This can be a Matric Certificate that needs improvement on certain subjects OR a failed statement of results.
  • You have to be able to study via distance learning
  • Understand English

Is The NSC And SC(A) The Same?

Yes, they look the same BUT there are some differences:

  1. The certificates are partially different
  2. The mark allocation and study process is different

The Certificates Are Partially Different

Although both of these certificates are awarded by Umalusi they have different qualification names as well as have different credits.

Adult Matric

The qualification title on the Senior Certificate (Amended) will be Senior Certificate and amended in brackets at the bottom of the qualification title. With regards to the credits, a Senior Certificate (Amended) is 120 credits.

This is because Adult Matric only has 6 subjects and does NOT include Life Orientation.

High School

The qualification title on the National Senior Certificate will have “National Senior Certificate” as the title of the qualification.

With regards to the credits, a National Senior Certificate is 130 credits.

*You can use both of these qualifications to further your studies and apply for entry-level jobs. Remember that each university has its own requirements and its courses also have specific requirements. This applies to different employers as well. Each employer can decide whether or not they want to employ you with a matric certificate.

The Mark Allocation And Study Process Is Different

Both of these qualifications provide you with the opportunity to study at universities as well as apply for entry-level jobs. That is regardless of how the study process works or how the marks are assigned.

Adult Matric

Adult Matric gives students the opportunity to complete their matric by only writing 6 subjects in the final exam.

Students will not be expected to submit any assignments. This means that your final exam mark will be your final mark on your matric certificate.

High School

When you are a student in high school your class marks, as well as your final exam marks, will count towards your final mark. The class marks include the following:

  • Tests
  • Oral presentations
  • Assignments
  • Trail examinations (Preliminary / Preparatory exams)
  • June examinations

At What Age Do You Do Matric?

The National Senior Certificate and Senior Certificate (Amended) are done at different ages. Here is all you need to know.

You can pass by following these five steps:

  1. Go through past papers
  2. Study with friends
  3. Stick to a schedule
  4. Ask for help
  5. Have a positive attitude

Go Through Past Papers

The principal of Matric College, Jan Badenhorst’s, ultimate tip is to go through past papers. The chances that the same questions might come in the exams are high. You can even complete past papers with your friends.

Study With Friends

When you are studying with friends, you learn a lot. Students have different ways of studying and you can learn a lot from them. This will give you the chance to ask questions and have in-depth discussions about certain topics. It can also be a fun way of learning, if students stick to a schedule and limit their discussions.

Stick To A Schedule

Always stick to a fixed schedule, this way you will know when to study. Schedules make you aware of the time you have to study as well as how much you still need to study. Most importantly, you have to be realistic about your schedule.

If you are studying via distance learning it is easy to forget about your schedule because nobody can keep you accountable for it. For extra measure, give another person a copy of your schedule, this way they can also keep you accountable for it. Another way to stay on schedule is to paste your schedule where you will always see it. This can remind you of your study times.

Ask For Help

If you are struggling with anything while you are studying, you can always ask for help from your peers, friends, family and tutors.

Asking for help does not mean that you cannot do the work, it simply means that you do not understand the work. If you ask for help, you can get the answers. You will never forget the answers once someone has explained them to you in-depth.

Have A Positive Attitude

You are your main source of motivation and inspiration. Always have a positive attitude when you are studying or completing assignments. If you put yourself in a negative space, you will get negative outcomes. Positivity makes it easier for you to achieve your goals.
