Senior Certificate

Senior Certificate

Senior Certificates are what is generally referred to as a Matric Certificate in South Africa. However, there is a bit more to it. There are three types of Senior Certificates:

National Senior Certificate (Matric) - NSC

A National Senior Certificate (NSC) is awarded to learners who have passed their exams and finished their final year of high school. It is most commonly known as Matric/Grade 12.

When you receive your National Senior Certificate, your final marks will be a combination of your in-class tests, assignments and final exams.

Senior Certificate (Amended) Also Known As Adult Matric - SC(A)

A Senior Certificate (Amended) is awarded to adult learners who have passed their Adult Matric exams. When being awarded a Senior Certificate (Amended), it is worth remembering that the marks that are on the certificate are only your exam results. No class tests or assignments that you have completed will count towards your final results.

Upgrade Matric - NSC

If you did your National Senior Certificate (Matric) between 2008 and now, you can apply for an Upgrade Matric Course to improve your marks. The qualification you get awarded on completion is a National Senior Certificate.

The National Senior Certificate and Senior Certificate (Amended) fall under the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 4. Both certificates look the same and the only difference is that you complete one as a young student in high school and the other, you would complete through college, as an adult. In South Africa, both certificates are awarded by Umalusi, which is a professional (accreditation) body.

What Does Umalusi Do?

Umalusi is a South African accreditation body. They are a Quality Council that develops and maintains reliable and valuable education standards. Umalusi does the following:

  • Gives accreditation to education and training providers
  • Sets qualifications recognised in South Africa
  • Maintains a professional standard for the General Further Education and Training
  • Verifies certificates

Umalusi is responsible for certifying Matriculation Qualifications. These are:

NOTE: You can use both the National Senior Certificate and Senior Certificate (Amended) to study further at university. Remember that your acceptance depends on whether you meet the university entry requirements as well as the requirements for the course that you would like to study.

Can I Combine My Senior Certificate (Amended) And National Senior Certificate?

Yes, you can combine a Senior Certificate (Amended) and National Senior Certificate (NSC). If you have two Matric results, you can apply for a combined set of results from the  Department of Basic Education. It is important to note that the department does not combine marks unless you apply for it to be done.

How Does The Combination Of Senior Certificate (Amended) And National Senior Certificate Work?

Here are the options you can use to get your National Senior Certificate and Senior Certificate (Amended) combined:

  • Postal Method
  • Visit The Department of Basic Education (website or offices)

Why Should I Study Via Distance Learning?

Here are a few reasons why you should study via distance learning at Matric College:

  • Spend Less Money
  • Set Your Study Schedule
  • Gain/Improve Your Skills
  • Develop Discipline
  • Grow Your Network

Spend Less Money

As a student studying via distance learning, you save a lot of money because there are no physical classes to attend. This means that the money you would normally spend on transport, food and other academic expenses can go straight into your savings account.

Set Your Study Schedule

You get to set your own study schedule. You may choose to study part-time or full-time, the choice is yours. Students who are very busy during the day, working or with family commitments, can set their study schedule for the hours that suit them and it will have no negative impact on their other commitments.

Gain/Improve Your Skills

You can gain new skills or improve the ones you already have. Matric College has courses that range from 2 to 6 months and longer. These courses are skills-based and will add to your qualifications and skills.

Develop Self-Discipline

Studying through distance learning, where there are no contact classes and activities are instructed online, gives you the ability to develop self-discipline. This is a skill that is highly valued in the working world.

Grow Your Network

As a student studying with other students from within South Africa and around the world, you will have the opportunity to grow your network. This may lead to opportunities such as finding yourself moving abroad to study further, a job or even starting your own business.

Here is a list of reasons why you may want to sign up for a Matric Upgrade

  • To Study Further
  • Course Entry
  • Job Opportunities
  • Bursary Opportunities
  • Boost Your Academic Confidence

To Study Further

When you upgrade your marks, you are giving yourself a chance of getting better results in your exams. These improved results could be used to apply at the university of your choice. Remember to research the university you want to go to and make sure you are studying the right subjects to satisfy its entry requirements.

Course Entry

Universities want specific marks for specific subjects before they will accept your application. When you Upgrade your Matric through Matric College, you can add new subjects that you have not studied before. Add the subjects you may need for your chosen university, OR chosen field of study entry requirements and when you have passed – enrol.

Job Opportunities

Whenever you apply for a job, you will need to add a copy of your Matric certificate to your CV. If employers look at your certificate and see that you achieved good marks because you took the time to improve them through the Matric Upgrade course, you will have a better chance of being hired. Good marks show you are willing to work hard and have self-discipline.

Bursary Opportunities

You can have access to bursaries if you achieve good results. Improving your results with a Matric Upgrade can help you get a bursary. Bursaries have specific requirements, and the majority of them only accept students who have passed with really good marks. Upgrade your marks and you may be able to get a bursary.

Boost Your Academic Confidence

Upgrading your marks will boost your academic confidence. This will motivate you to study harder and that will help you do better in your exams.

Benefits Of Distance Learning At Matric College

  • You set your own study schedule
  • Study at your pace

Useful Tips To Help You Pass Your Senior Certificate (Amended)

Here is a list of tips on how to pass your Senior Certificate (Amended):

  • Take advantage of Past Papers
  • Have A Study Timetable
  • Ask Questions
  • Join Group Discussions
  • Make Notes
  • Complete Tasks
Take Advantage Of Past Papers

Use past question papers. This is because examiners will set the same questions repeatedly in different or similar ways. If you have made use of past papers during your studies, it will be easier to answer questions correctly in the exam.

Have A Study Timetable

Make a study timetable that you follow. Students who take time to read their books understand subjects better and are most likely to pass with better results than other students.

Ask Questions

If you do not understand a topic, ask your tutors. They might end up answering other topics that you did not know you needed clarity on as well.

Join Group Discussions

Join other students who are studying and take part in group discussions. Studying in groups will motivate you to learn more. It will also help when you ask each other questions and share knowledge on different topics.

Make Notes

Make notes when you have discussions with tutors or other learners. This is a sure way to not forget what you have learnt. Going over your study notes will help you to retain and understand information.

Complete Tasks

If you are given a task to complete, do it, no matter how small it is. All the information you retain from these tasks will help you to understand your subjects better.

Here is a list of the different pass levels you can get with a Senior Certificate (Amended):

Bachelor’s Degree Pass

You must obtain a minimum of:

  • 40% in your home language
  • 50% in 4 subjects
  • 30% in 2 other subjects

Diploma Pass

You must obtain a minimum of:

  • 40% in your home language
  • 40% in 4 subjects
  • 30% in 2 other subjects

Higher Certificate Pass

You must obtain a minimum of:

  • 40% in your home language
  • 40% in 2 subjects
  • 30% in 3 other subjects

Senior Certificate (Amended) Pass

You must obtain a minimum of:

  • 40% in your home language
  • 40% in 2 other subjects
  • 20% in other subjects

To enter university, you need to have a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree pass. Even though you have these pass levels, you must meet the university requirements to be accepted. Research the university you want to go to and work towards meeting its requirements as well as the requirements of the field of study you are wanting to enrol in.

You calculate your APS score in the following way:

Subjects Results Received Mark Percentage APS Score
Mathematics 28% 0-29% 1 point
Geography 35% 30-39% 2 points
Life sciences 40% 40-49% 3 points
Life orientation 54% 50-59% 4 points
Physical sciences 61% 60-69% 5 points
English 75% 70-79% 6 points
Afrikaans 80% (Distinction) 80-100% 7 points [Total APS = 28 points]

Another example of an APS score is :

  • Mathematics – 29% = 1 point
  • Tshivenda Home Language – 78% = 6 points
  • English First Additional Language – 67% = 5 points
  • Life Orientation – 58% (They do not count L.O when they calculate APS)
  • Accounting – 45% = 3 points
  • Economics – 56% = 4 points
  • Business Studies – 28% = 1 point

Total APS Score = 20 points

The lowest APS score is 14 points. To be able to get into a university, you need an APS score of at least 35 points. The APS score is not the only thing that determines your acceptance into university. Your focus should be more on the requirements of the specific university and the specific field of study you want to follow. For example, a university may require you to have an Accounting subject to study for a Degree in Financial Management.

If you do your research in time, you will know that they expect an Accounting subject for Financial Management. If you find that you do not meet their minimum requirement, you can upgrade your studies to include Accounting as a subject to add to your Matric certificate.

Some universities may require the subjects you already have, but with a specific percentage. For example, if you want to study for a Diploma in Human Resource Management, the university may require 60% in Mathematics. If you know this ahead of time, you can study even harder and set your goals to meet those specific requirements.

No, 75% applies as a distinction to higher levels of education, such as a university. Although the Senior Certificate (Amended) is for adult learners, they fall under the Department of Basic Education. The distinction percentage for a Senior Certificate (Amended) and any other education level under basic education is 80% and higher.

You can find your Senior Certificate (Amended) results at one of the following places:

Can I Be Successful Without A Senior Certificate (Amended)?

Yes, you can be successful without A Senior Certificate (Amended). Having a Senior Certificate (Amended) is important because it allows you to study further at university, but it is not the only way you can be successful. Some learners do not have the opportunity or capacity to study for a Senior Certificate (Amended) and this is why we have so many learners who drop out of school in South Africa.

Statistics by the Department of Basic Education and Training show that every year about 50% of learners complete their National Senior Certificate and about 48% drop out. This means that not all learners are going through the high school experience. If you have dropped out, OR you do not have a Senior Certificate, you can try one of the following options:

Grade 12 Statistics
  • Get A Job
  • Start A Business
  • Study Further

Get A Job

You can look for entry-level jobs that need little or no experience at all. These types of jobs build your work experience and open you up to more opportunities for higher-level job opportunities. If you cannot find an entry-level job, try looking for volunteer work. This is a good way to add experience to your CV and learn practical skills. Potential employers will see that you are a dedicated candidate who does not value money more than gaining experience and will be more likely to hire you.

Start A Business

You do not need to have a Senior Certificate (Amended) to open your own business. You can run a business with no qualification at all, however, having a qualification will be very helpful.

If you want to advance your business skills, you can consider studying a business course through Matric College that does not require a Senior Certificate (Amended) to study the course. You can enrol for our ICB Small Business Financial Management Course. If you do not have Grade 11, you can start by studying our ICB Bookkeeping National Certificate Course, which only needs Grade 10. With this qualification, you will gain scarce skills that will help you to grow your business and be a success.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions students ask:

  • Do I Get A Senior Certificate (Amended) If I Failed?
  • Can I Go To University With A Senior Certificate (Amended)?

Yes, the Department of Basic Education will issue you a statement of results and your Senior Certificate (Amended) even if you failed.
