Second Chance Matric Programme
The Second Chance Matric Programme is for students who have recently completed their Matric at school and need to improve their marks, or that need to pass Matric. This allows students to complete their Matric for a second time. Students can apply at:
- The High School that they previously attended
- A new High School
- At the Department of Basic Education
- A distance learning college like Matric College
Who Qualifies For The Matric Second Chance Programme?
You qualify for the Matric Second Chance Programme if:
- You are younger than 21 years
- You have recently completed your Matric
- You have failed your Matric
- You need to improve your Matric marks to gain university admission
- You could not attend the final exam sitting because:
- You were ill and you have proof
- You had a death in the family, and you have proof

Repeat Your Matric In High School
You can repeat your Matric in High School to do your Matric for a second time. This only applies to students who are younger than 21 years old. If you are older than 21 years old and could not complete your Matric in High School, you can complete it as an adult. We offer an Adult Matric Course for these types of students.
Here is what you need to apply for the Adult Matric Course:
- Be 21 and older to qualify for the exams (you can start the course as early as 19 years)
- Have a Grade 9 Certificate or
- ABET Level 4
- Understand, read and write English or Afrikaans
- Study through distance learning
How Many Times Can You Repeat Matric?
You can only repeat Matric until you reach the age of 21. After you turn 21, you have to complete the Adult Matric Course. The only time you can complete Matric over the age of 21 is if you are already in the schooling system. For example, you turn 21 in Grade 11 and pass to the next grade, which is Grade 12.
