Matric Rewrite vs Matric Upgrade — What’s the Difference?

If you want to redo your matric subjects, you have two main options: a rewrite or an upgrade.

  • Matric Rewrite: You write the same subjects again to improve your marks. This is best if you passed but want higher results, or if you failed one or two subjects.

  • Matric Upgrade: You change or add new subjects to your certificate. This works well if your career or study path requires different subjects than the ones you originally took.

Both options give you the chance to improve your results, but the right choice depends on your goals. If you just want higher marks, a rewrite is enough. If you want new subject combinations, then an upgrade is the way to go.

Why You Should Redo Your Matric Subjects

Redoing your matric subjects is more than just rewriting exams, it’s about giving yourself a second chance. Whether you struggled the first time or simply want to improve your results, this step can open new doors and help you move forward with confidence.

You Will Gain Confidence

Rewriting your Matric will bring back your academic confidence. When you do well in your assessments, you will feel proud of the work you have done. This will encourage you to not look down on yourself because you have what it takes to pass.

Earn University Admission

Rewriting your Matric can help you earn better marks. These marks can be used to apply to the university. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree Pass, you will have a better chance of getting admitted to the university. Applicants must, however, meet the requirements set by the university and the course they have applied for.

Find Employment

When you rewrite your Matric, you do it to obtain better marks. Having good marks increases your opportunity of getting entry-level employment nationally. The marks you earn can impress employers, leading them to hire you.

Rewriting your Matric shows the employer that you do not give up easily in life, and this is a good quality to have in the working world. This can help you find employment.

What Happens After Rewriting a Matric?

After you’ve completed your Matric Rewrite, you’ll receive a new set of results reflecting your improved marks or subject changes. These results are issued by Umalusi, the official quality assurance body in South Africa, which means your certificate is just as valid as if you had achieved the results the first time.

With your new certificate in hand, you can:

  • Apply to university or college – If your marks now meet the requirements, you can pursue higher education opportunities that were previously out of reach.
  • Boost your CV – Employers value persistence and determination. Having rewritten your Matric shows you didn’t give up and equips you with better results to apply for jobs.
  • Study further courses – From business management to beauty therapy, your new results open doors to specialised training and professional courses.
  • Build confidence – Perhaps the most powerful outcome is personal. Many students walk away from their Matric Rewrite not only with better marks, but also with renewed belief in themselves.

Rewriting your Matric is more than redoing subjects, it’s about creating new opportunities for your education, your career, and your personal growth.

Don’t let past marks define you. Rewrite your subjects, boost your confidence, and step boldly toward your dream career.

What Can I Study If I Failed Matric?

Failing Matric can be discouraging. However, it is important to know that not everyone will pass their Matric the first time. You may do better if you redo your Matric. You must also keep in mind that you can further your studies even if you do not have Matric.

People Also Ask

Yes, you can! Once you have finished Grade 10, you’re allowed to change up to two of your subjects.

This can help if you’ve realised that a subject is too difficult or doesn’t match your career goals. But here’s the catch—you must do this before the start of Grade 11, and you need approval from your school and the Department of Education. It’s always a good idea to talk to your teacher or principal first so they can help you make the best choice.

You cannot write the traditional school Matric exams without finishing Grade 11. But there’s good news!

If you’re 21 years or older, you can register for something called the Amended Senior Certificate—also known as Adult Matric. You don’t need to have passed Grade 11 to do this. All you need is a Grade 9 report (or equivalent like ABET Level 4) and you can still complete your Matric as an adult through distance learning.

Yes, it is possible to take more than seven subjects, but it’s not very common. Most students take seven subjects, which is the minimum required for a National Senior Certificate. If you want to take extra subjects, you need special permission from your school and the Department of Basic Education. Also, it means a heavier workload—so make sure you’re ready for the challenge!

A Matric Rewrite is when you rewrite subjects you’ve already written in your final exams, usually to improve your marks. This is available if you wrote Matric but didn’t get the results you were hoping for.

A Matric Upgrade, on the other hand, is for students who want to change their subject choices or improve results even years after finishing school. With an upgrade, you can replace up to four subjects, giving you the freedom to align your studies with your career or university goals.

You can study for your Matric online through distance learning with Matric College. This means you’ll get all your study material, guidance, and tutor support from home, without attending physical classes.

However, the final Matric exams cannot be written online. They must be written in-person at an official exam centre approved by the Department of Basic Education or Umalusi.

So, while you can study, prepare, and practice online, the official exam itself will always be a written, in-person assessment.
