To understand your Matric results, you must know what it takes to pass. There are different levels of passing Matric. This is categorised into four levels. To pass your Matric, you must obtain one of the following pass levels: 

To receive the above pass levels, you must meet the following requirements: 

Requirements For A Bachelor’s Degree Pass Level

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 50% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 

Requirements For A Diploma Pass Level

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 40% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 

Requirements For A Higher Certificate Pass Level

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 40% in two subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in four other subjects

Requirements For A National Senior Certificate Pass Level

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in three subjects 
  • You can fail one subject 

Why Is A Bachelor’s Degree Pass Important?

A Bachelor’s Degree Pass is important because it helps you gain access to university. This is the pass that helps you study for Degree courses and many others. When you have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass, you have a better chance of studying at any university you want. 

Most bursary opportunities require that you have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass in order to gain access. If you have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass, your chances of gaining a bursary will be higher. You will study at university with no financial pressure. 

Do note that your acceptance into university is not automatic because you have passed with a Bachelor’s Degree. You must meet the requirements set by the university and the course you have applied for in order to study. 

How Are Matric Results Calculated?

Matric results are calculated based on the following: 

  • School-based assessments (SBA) 
  • Final Examination

School-Based Assessments (SBA)

The SBA contributes 25% towards your final marks. These are the marks that are used to boost your final examination marks. You must make sure that you complete the School-based assessments so that you earn marks that will be helpful in your finals. 

The SBA assessments include: 

  • Class presentations 
  • June examination 
  • Trial examination 
  • Assignments 
  • Tests

Final Examination

The final examination contributes 75% towards your final mark. You must ensure that you pass this well in order to have a good final mark. These are the results that will appear on your Matric Certificate. 

Your final examination marks are combined with your School-based assessment marks and create your final marks. This is how your final marks are calculated.

How Much Is A Distinction In Matric?

A distinction pass in Matric is a mark of 80% and above. This is an excellent mark that helps you gain recognition. When you have good marks, you have a better chance of gaining access to the following: 

How Can I Get Distinctions In Matric?

You can get a distinction (80% or higher marks) in Matric by doing the following: 

  • Write notes in class
  • Ask a lot of questions 
  • Study every day for over five hours 
  • Study to understand 
  • Get a personal tutor to assist or attend extra classes 
  • Use past exam papers when studying
  • Join a study group with hard-working students 
  • Perform research on the internet to get more information

How Important Is Your Matric Certificate?

Your Matric Certificate is important because you need it to go to university. If you have not passed Matric, you cannot apply to university. You must have a Matric Certificate which is a Bachelor’s Degree pass in order to study. 

Your Matric Certificate is important because it can get you entry-level employment. You can work as a:   

  • Receptionist 
  • Personal Assistant          
  • Waitress/Waiter 
  • Cashier 
  • Sales Agent 
  • Retail Associate 
  • Store Packer 
  • General Worker

Do You Need A Matric To Be Successful?

No, you do not need Matric to be successful. A Matric Certificate is a very important qualification in South Africa, and it makes things easy. However, this does not necessarily mean that you cannot be successful if you do not have it. 

There are many options to help you make a successful living without Matric. For example, you can study at Matric College. We are a distance learning institution that offers a variety of courses. Some of these courses include courses you can study without Matric.

Short Courses

Short Courses are created to help you gain a set of skills that are good for employment. These skills are also great if you want to open a business. This increases your chances of getting employed or opening a successful business.

Rewrite Matric Course

We offer the Rewrite Matric Course at Matric College for students who want to rewrite their Matric. If you failed, you have a chance to study and pass your Matric. When you study this course, we help you by providing the following to ensure that you pass: 

Adult Matric Course

If you have been out of High School for a long time, and you are 21 years or older, you can study the Adult Matric Course. You will gain knowledge that is good for the university. When you have completed the Adult Matric Course, you will receive a Matric Certificate, which can be used to study at university or find an internship. 

Can You Do Matric Twice?

Yes, you can do your Matric twice. If you failed Matric recently, and you are under the age of 21, you qualify to redo your Matric. You can go back to your previous High School or choose a different one where you can study your Matric again. 

Studying your Matric for the second time helps you have a better chance to pass. You have experience with how the class works. You can create a study plan on how you can pass your Matric this time around. Here are a few tips to help you: 

  • Study every day for at least four hours 
  • Study to understand always 
  • Ask questions in class when you are confused 
  • Take notes in class 
  • Use past exam papers to study 
  • Attend all classes 
  • Join a study group 
  • Attend extra classes 
  • Complete all class assessments
