How Do I Register To Write The Adult Matric Exam?

Here are the two ways in which you can register to write your Adult Matric exams through distance learning:

You can register for the Adult Matric exams online by visiting the South African e-Service Portal.

In person

You can register for your Adult Matric exam in person at your nearest Department of Basic Education (DBE) office.

Documents You Will Need

Here are the documents that you will need when you register for your Adult Matric exam:

  • Completed registration form
  • A certified copy of your ID or birth certificate
  • Non-South Africans will need to use their passports
  • Repeat candidates must include a copy of their previous highest qualification 
  • Examination numbers of previous Grade 12 or Grade 12 Equivalent exams

Can I Register For Matric Now?

Yes, you can register for the upcoming Senior Certificate (Adult Matric) exams. For the 2025 exams, registration closed on 7 February 2025. However, registration for the 2026 exam cycle is now open in many provinces.

In the Western Cape, for example:

  • Online registration runs from 1 October 2025 to 27 January 2026.
  • Manual registration runs from 3 November 2025 to 27 January 2026.

If you live in another province, check with your local Department of Education for specific dates and requirements.

Is There Any Age Limit For Matric?

While there is an age limit for traditional High School Matric, there is none for Adult Matric. Therefore, your age won’t be a barrier to improving your education here.

How Many Subjects Must I Pass To Get A Matric Certificate?

Here are the number of subjects you need to pass Matric in order to be awarded a Matric Certificate:

  • Adult Matric – You need to write six (6) subjects and pass at least five (5)  
  • National Senior Certificate – You need to write seven (7) subjects and pass at least six (6)

What Are The 4 Matric Pass Levels?

There are four Matric Pass Levels:

  1. Bachelors Degree Pass
  2. Diploma Pass
  3. Higher Certificate Pass
  4. National Senior Certificate Pass

Bachelors Degree Pass

This is the highest Matric Pass Level. With this pass, you can be admitted to study for a Bachelor’s Degree at a University. You will need to obtain the following minimum passes:

National Senior Certificate Pass

This is an ordinary pass in Matric. With this pass, you can be admitted to study any course which requires just a Matric pass. Here are the minimum requirements for an ordinary Matric pass:

At least 3 subjects with 40%. One of these subjects should be an official Home Language

At least 40% in your Home Language

You can fail 1 subject. The minimum percentage you can get for this subject is 20%.

At least 30% in three other subjects. You can fail one subject even if it is your First Additional Language, but you must get 30% or more for the rest of the subjects

What is APS?

APS stands for Admission Points Score. When your Matric exams are marked, the percentage you receive for each subject is assigned a specific score. The score range is from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest and 1 being the lowest. The sum total of the scores of all your subjects will make up your APS. Who Qualifies For A Matric Rewrite?

You qualify for a Matric Rewrite if you meet the following requirements:

  • You already wrote Matric and have a Matric Certificate but want to improve your results
  • You did not pass Matric
  • You missed an exam due to an illness or family circumstances
  • You are younger than 21 years old
  • If you are older than 21, you can apply for a Matric Upgrade.
  • You do not qualify for a Matric Rewrite if you need to rewrite four (4) subjects to get a National Senior Certificate Pass (the lowest Matric Pass Level).

Can I Buy Matric Certificate?

No, you cannot buy a Matric Certificate. It is illegal to buy a Matric Certificate. If you are caught, you can be prosecuted.

For you to get a Matric Certificate, you will need to go through the following process:

  • Register at Matric College
  • Receive your study material upon successful registration
  • Complete your assignments in time every time
  • Get help from your tutors in areas that you are struggling with
  • Study and prepare for your Matric exams
