Advice for people without a matric

If you do not have Matric, you can further your education through Matric College by studying any of our Adult Matric, Rewrite Matric, ICB or Short Courses.

Not having a Matric Qualification can feel overwhelming. This applies to whether you have failed or never made it to Matric. The best thing you can do if you do not have Matric is to study through Matric College. We offer courses you can study without Matric. 

If you want to study for a Matric Certificate or other higher qualifications, you can. These are the courses you can choose from: 

Adult Matric Course 

The Adult Matric Course is created specifically for adults ages 21 or older. By taking this course, you will be able to study Matric. When studying the Adult Matric Course, you will complete six subjects. With these subjects, students learn about different topics. If you pass five or all six subjects, you are considered to have passed the course.

Once you have completed the Adult Matric Course, the college awards you a Matric Certificate from Umalusi which you can use to apply for work, university or college

Rewrite Matric Course

The Rewrite Matric Course is designed to provide students who failed Matric with a second chance to rewrite their final exam. This course is a course which gets you ready for your exam. 

As a college, we ensure our students have the necessary exam resources. These are the resources we provide our students: 

You will receive a Matric Certificate from Umalusi once you have completed the Rewrite Matric Course. This can be used to find employment or to study at a college or university

ICB Courses 

You can study any of our ICB Courses with a Grade 10 or Grade 10 Equivalent Qualification. We offer three ICB Programmes. They all focus on skills and knowledge that is useful to students that want to start a business or students that want to work in a business environment. 

The skills you earn through ICB courses are known as scarce skills. These skills are in demand in South Africa. When you have these skills, you become a valuable candidate in the working environment. 

When you have passed an ICB Course, you graduate and receive an ICB Qualification. You can apply for work, and further your education or open a business with an ICB Qualification. Here are the ICB Courses you can enrol for: 

Short Courses 

You can enrol for a Short Course without any qualification. You are only required to meet the requirements set by the college. These are:

  • You can read, write and understand English 
  • You are able to study via distance learning
  • You are 16 years or older 

Short Courses are best if you want to study courses that are short and straightforward. Here are the qualities of a Short Course: 

  • Can be completed in a few months 
  • You do not write exams (only assignments are available) 
  • Your skills are improved 
  • You gain new skills

Can I Get A Good Job Without Matric?

Yes, you can get employment without Matric. You can apply for work that requires you to have any qualification below Matric. You can qualify for careers such as the following: 

  • Personal Assistant 
  • Cashier      
  • Picker 
  • Sales Consultant 
  • Call Centre Agent 
  • Waiter/Waitress

Why Is It Important To Have Matric?

It is important to have Matric because it helps you have easy access to the following things in South Africa: 

University 

It is important to have Matric because it helps you study at university. Please note that you can only apply to university if you have passed your Matric with a Bachelor’s Degree Pass. Your acceptance depends on whether you have met the requirements that the university has set.

If you gain admission into the university, you can study for the course of your choice. This will provide you with skills and knowledge that will help you gain employment when you look for work. 

Employment 

You can get employment using a Matric Qualification. There are various careers you can follow using your Matric Qualification. These are: 

  • Sales Representative 
  • Call Centre Agent 
  • Personal Assistant 
  • Student Support Administrator 
  • Retail Associate

Bursaries 

You can use a Matric Certificate in South Africa to apply for bursary opportunities. If you are preparing to go to university or college, you can apply for a bursary. Most of these bursaries require a Matric Certificate amongst other requirements that you must meet. 

If you have good marks, you will have a higher chance of getting a bursary for further studies. This is why it is important that you pass your Matric well. A bursary helps you settle your financial obligations such as tuition and accommodation fees. It also helps you study without financial stress. 

Where Can I Study Matric?

You can study Matric at two different institutions. If you are under the age of 21, you can complete your Matric in High School. This is known as traditional Matric. If you are 21 years or older, you can complete your Matric through Matric College. You can do this by studying our Adult Matric Course

For both traditional Matric and Adult Matric, you are awarded a Matric Certificate from Umalusi when you have passed.

How Do I Pass Matric?

Passing Matric is not hard. You simply need to obtain a mark of at least 50% to pass. There are four different levels of passing Matric. Below we have listed the pass levels from the highest to the lowest:

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 50% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 
  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 40% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 
  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of  40% in two subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in four other subjects

  • You can fail one subject 

If you pass your Matric well, you can use the Matric Certificate you are awarded to further our education or find employment. You can apply at Matric College and study any of our courses, with any Matric Pass Level.
