Failing matric is not the end of the road, simply because there are a range of other options that you can choose from. In addition to that, if you still want to get your matric, you can!

I failed matric - Now what?

Matric upgrade

Upgrading your matric results allows you to improve your marks. When you upgrade your matric results you are not required to rewrite all of your matric subjects, you can focus on the subjects you want to improve. 

A matric upgrade can be very helpful for students who want better results for university or college.

How to get a matric upgrade

  • Step 1: Do some research and get a clear understanding of the career path you would like to take
  • Step 2: Decide which subjects you want to improve 
  • Step 3: Register for a matric upgrade with Matric College
  • Step 4: Know your exam dates and make sure that you are prepared for your exams
  • Step 5: Show up on time and write your exams

Options after failing matric

If you have failed your matric, you are not forced to rewrite. There are a variety of other study options that you can choose from.

I have to get a matric

If you really want to get your matric, you can apply to do your Adult matric. Adult matric, also known as the Amended National Senior Certificate(ANSC), is a way for people over 21 years, who have completed grade 9 to get a matric certificate.

To qualify for adult matric exams you have to meet these requirements:

  • You have to be 21 or older to write adult matric exams
  • Must have completed grade 9 or a qualification equivalent to grade 9
  • Certified copy of your ID (South African candidates)
  • Valid passport, Visa or study permit (Foreign candidates)
  • Proof of residence 
  • A copy of your previous result highest qualification
