What to study with the ICB

ICB offers three programmes that you can choose to study. ICB courses are scarce skills courses. You can study some of the ICB programmes without Matric.

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers offers three programmes of study. Here are the programmes of study that the ICB offers: 

ICB Financial Accounting Programme

  • Grade 10 or Equivalent Certificate
  • You must be 16 years or older
  • Able to read, write and understand English
  • Be able to study through distance learning

Matric Equivalent Qualifications

Matric Equivalent Qualifications are course programmes that are at the same National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level as Matric. They are grouped the same because of the same learning experiences. Matric is at NQF level 4.

What Subjects Are Needed To Study ICB Courses?

As you can see from the entry requirements of ICB Courses, there are no specific subjects that are needed to study ICB Courses. If you are a holder of a Matric, and you want to study the ICB Office Administration Programme, you qualify with any of the subjects that you studied. The entry requirements to study ICB Courses are very flexible.

Can I Study Directly Through ICB?

No, you can not study through ICB. This is because ICB is an Independent External Examination body. This means that the ICB is only in charge of all issues that concern exams. They do not offer any tuition or study material. Here are some of the functions of the ICB:

  • Registering students for the exams
  • Courses syllabus
  • Setting of exams
  • Marking of exams
  • Assessing Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • Accrediting Learning Providers

How Do I Study ICB Courses?

You can study ICB Courses at Matric College. What you will need to do is to register with Matric College first before you register with ICB. Here are the ways that you can use to register with Matric College:

Once you have registered with Matric College, you can now register as a student on the ICB Student Portal:

  • Fill in all the relevant details
  • Click register
  • You will now be redirected to another page where you will fill in all your personal details
  • After this, you now be able to log in with your new login details

Why Should I Study An ICB Course?

Here is why you should consider studying an ICB Course:

  • It is a scarce skills course – A scarce skills course is one whose skills and knowledge are in demand on the job market. This means that as soon as you complete your course, it will not take you long to find a job. Employers are always looking for people with scarce skills.
  • It is accreditedICB Courses are accredited. This means that they have gone through a quality check and have been certified as being on the required standards by accreditation bodies. ICB is accredited with the following bodies:
    • SAQA – South African Qualifications Authority
    • QCTO – Quality Council of Trades and Occupations
    • ICB – Institute of Certified Bookkeepers 
    • DHET – Department of Higher Education and Training
  • ICB courses are recognised ICB Courses are recognised by both employers and other professional bodies. Other professional bodies recognise ICB Programmes either for membership or for exemptions when ICB graduates study with them. The following bodies recognise ICB Courses:
    • ACCA – Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
    • CIMA – Chartered Institute of Management accountants
    • SAIT – South African Institute of Taxation
  • They are career-oriented – ICB Programmes are career-oriented. This means that the courses set you on a career path as you study from one course to the next:
  • Study by distance learning – You can study an ICB Programme through distance learning. This means that you study and work at the same time. It will be to your advantage if you are already working in an environment that lets you practice what you are learning. Furthermore, you are able to fund your education by working at the same time as you are learning.
