NSC/SC Related Application

You can get your National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) by studying through Matric College for our Upgrade Matric or Adult Matric Courses.

The Senior Certificate (SC) and the National Senior Certificate (NSC) have a few application processes that are related. Some of these include application processes that have to do with the qualifications. Below is a list of the application processes that the National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Senior Certificate (SC) have in common: 

Application For Lost Or Damaged Certificate 

If you lost or damaged your National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate Amended (SC (A)), you can make an application for a new one. Here is how you can start the process: 

The process can also be completed online. The same documents stipulated above will be required. You will need to download the replacement of the Matric Certificate form. This form will also include bank details that you will need when paying the fee for the replacement of your lost or damaged certificate. 

  • Get your personal information registered on this website: (www.eservices.gov.za)
  • Click this link to download the replacement Matric Certificate form 
  • Complete the form as required 
  • Attach the documents required with the form 
  • Pay a fee of R153 and provide the proof of payment as part of the other documents needed 
  • Send all the documents to this address (Private Bag X895, Pretoria, 0001

Or, you can apply through the official Umalusi application portal, where you can create an account, select which certificate you want to replace, and then upload your documents in digital format. You will need the same documents as listed above.

Once you have done this, you will need to select how you will receive the certificate.

You can: Collect it yourself from the Umalusi offices in Pretoria. This will cost R137,00 Have it couriered to you. This will cost R202,00.

These fees are in effect from 01 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.

Application For Change Of Status

If your National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate Amended is not more than 12 months old, you qualify to apply for a change of status. You need to visit the Department of Basic Education offices to explain in person what has to be changed. Please note that the DBE will only change the certificate if there is enough evidence that a mistake was made by the department or the school. For example, the error can be in the subject, marks or personal details. Below are the documents you will need to apply for the change of status in your Matric Certificate: These fees are in effect from 01 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.

Application For A Combination Of Results

If you have two Matric Certificates from two exam sittings, you can apply for the combination of results. For example, if you have a National Senior Certificate from one exam sitting and a Senior Certificate Amended from another exam sitting, you can combine them. These are the documents you will need to apply for the combination of results: 
  • Results from both exam sittings
  • Your ID book/card
  • A certified copy of your ID book/card
  • Proof of payment of R153.00 (this can be paid through postal method or at the DBE or provincial offices)
These fees are in effect from 01 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.

Application For Verification Of Certificate

You can apply for the verification of your National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate Amended. You will need to contact one of the verification clients that work with Umalusi. You can find the contact information on the Umalusi website.  You must contact the verification clients only if your Matric Qualification (National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate Amended) was issued after the year 1992 November. If your Matric Certificate was issued before 1992, you must contact the Department of Basic Education. They will verify whether your certificate is registered or not.

What Is A Senior Certificate (SC) And A National Senior Certificate (NSC)?

The Senior Certificate Amended (SC (A)) is a Matric Qualification. This is awarded to adult students who have passed their Adult Matric Course. The Adult Matric Course is similar to Matric in High School. The only difference is that you must be 21 years or older to take this course, and it is done through a college.

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) is a Matric Qualification that is awarded to learners in High School who have passed Matric (Grade 12). The NSC is similar to the Adult Matric Course. The only difference is that the NSC is completed in High School when you are younger than 21.

What Are The National Senior Certificate (NSC) Subjects?

There are different subjects available in Matric (NSC). Of these subjects, you must study seven of them. Four are compulsory subjects and three are elective subjects. Here are the NSC subjects you study: 

Compulsory subjects 

From the compulsory subjects listed below. You must choose four subjects that are the following: 

  • Home Language subject
  • Life Orientation subject 
  • Mathematical subject
  • English First Additional Language subject

  • English First Additional Language
  • Afrikaans Huistaal
  • Afrikaans Eerste Additionele Taal
  • isiXhosa Home Language
  • isiNdebele Home Language
  • Sepedi Home Language

  • Setswana Home Language
  • Tshivenda Home Language
  • isiZulu Home Language

  • Life Orientation 

Elective subjects 

There are also subjects that are elective. You can choose any subjects you want to study, given that you choose three (3) subjects:

  • Economics 
  • Physical Sciences
  • History 
  • Geography 
  • Religious Studies
  • Life Sciences 
  • Agricultural Sciences 
  • Business Studies 
  • Accounting 

You can pass only six subjects of the seven you study and pass Matric. This means you can fail one subject and still gain a Matric Qualification. However, you should always keep in mind that it is better to pass all subjects as it will increase your opportunities of getting admission at university. 

If you are studying the Adult Matric Course, you only need to have six subjects. You can pass only five subjects or all six. You will be able to gain a Matric Qualification and use it to study at college or university.

Does A Matric Certificate Expire?

No, your National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate Amended does not expire. This qualification is permanent. The only temporary document you receive is your statement of results, which is issued to you while you wait for your Matric Certificate.

Can I Upgrade My Matric At A College?

Yes, you can upgrade your Matric at a college. You can upgrade it through Matric College. This is what you will need to qualify for the Matric Upgrade Course
