New Amended 2021 School Calendar
The Department of Education has released the amended school calendar for the 2021 academic year.
This comes after the reopening of schools was pushed by 2 weeks due to the second-wave of the coronavirus.
What you need to know
Here is everything you need to know about the release of the 2021 academic calendar:
- The 2021 academic year will start on the 15th of February: The start of the school year was postponed by 2 weeks and will now start on the 15th of February.
- The 2021 academic year will end on the 15th of December: Schools will now have their last day of the academic year on the 15th of December. Students can expect to start their December holidays on the 16th of December.
- The school year will be made up of 192 days: The total number of learning days is close to 200.
- School holidays will take place in April, July, October and December: Students and their parents can start holiday planning accordingly.
This school calendar brings some stability to the academic year, it cannot, however, be completely set in stone.
There is no way of knowing when our or how badly another COVID-19 wave will hit. It could once again cause serious disruptions for the 2021 academic year.
When do matrics go back to school 2021?
The Department of Education announced that the schools will open on 15 February 2021.
Private schools can open earlier simply because the DBE has no say in the dates on which independent schools open or close.
