NATED courses are designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The DHET designed these courses to mend the youth unemployment gap in South Africa. NATED courses equip students with theoretical and practical knowledge. These are components that prepare students for the work environment. This makes it easy for students to find employment as they have the skills and knowledge that employers require. There are four courses in each NATED Programme offered at Matric College. These are: 

  • NATED N4 National Certificate
  • NATED N5 National Certificate
  • NATED N6 National Certificate
  • NATED N6 National Diploma

Our NATED courses are offered in partnership with Bellview Institute of Distance Learning.

Who Qualifies For NATED Courses?

Anyone, who meets the following requirements, qualifies to study a NATED course

  • Has a Matric Certificate (Amended Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate)
  • Is 16 years or older 
  • Can read, write and understand English 
  • Can study through distance learning

What Does N4 To N6 Mean?

N4 to N6 refers to the NATED Qualifications from first to last: 

  • NATED N4 National Certificate
  • NATED N5 National Certificate
  • NATED N6 National Certificate
  • NATED N6 National Diploma
How NATED Courses Work

​​How Do I Get My Diploma After N6?

Once you have completed the NATED N6 National Certificate, we send your results to the DHET. Once the DHET has approved, they send us your NATED N6 National Certificate, and we award it to you. When this is complete, you must complete 18 months of work experience to be awarded a NATED N6 National Diploma. Once you have completed this, the DHET awards you the Diploma Qualification themselves. 

How Do NATED Courses Work?

NATED Courses work in the following way:

Each NATED course is made up of assessments. These are used to determine if students can pass or not. There are 3 open book assignments for each subject in a course and one final examination set by the DHET. The assessments are only available for the three Certificate courses:

  • NATED N4 National Certificate
  • NATED N5 National Certificate
  • NATED N6 National Certificate

To receive the last qualification, which is the NATED N6 National Diploma, you must complete 18 months of work experience.

Here is how you can complete our work experience:

  • Register on the iWIL website 
    • The iWIL website is designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training
    • The purpose of the website is to help students find volunteer work where they can gain experience
  • Once you have registered, you will receive a job in a company at which you will complete your work experience
  • We will send you a logbook that you must complete throughout your work experience
    • You do not have to apply for a logbook, we automatically send you one
  • The manager of the business overseeing your work experience must sign off the logbook
  • Send the logbook back to us, and we will send it to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) for approval
  • Once the DHET has approved your logbook, they will issue your NATED N6 National Diploma

Note that there are no logbooks when it comes to the Educare course. You only need a report/letter from the Day Care Manager or principal of the business where you complete your work experience

Students have options to study NATED courses. They can study the Certificate courses ONLY or study the entire NATED Programme which includes the NATED N6 National Diploma. Below is a table to show you how you can study the courses individually or together:

If you want to study the entire programme you can do it this way:

  • You can study theory for 18 months and then complete 18 months of practical work experience afterwards.
  • Study 18 months of theory while doing practical work experience at the company you work for 
  • Complete 6 months of theory and 6 months of practical work experience, then obtain the N4 certificate, then continue the process until you reach the N6 certificate.

Can I Do NATED Courses Without Matric?

No, you cannot study NATED courses without Matric. You need a Matric Certificate to study. However, if you do not have a Matric Qualification, you can study the following courses to receive one:

Adult Matric

The Requirements For Adult Matric:

  • You must have at least a Grade 9 or equivalent qualification, 
    • i.e.: Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Level 4
  • You have an incomplete Matric 
  • You must be able to read, write and understand English or Afrikaans 
  • You must be 21 years or older to write the exams 
  • You may sign up for the Adult Matric at the age of 19 years old, but you will only be able to write the Adult Matric exam once you are over 21

Once you have completed this course, you will be awarded a Matric Certificate. You can use this to apply for any NATED course.

Business Management Courses

Yes, the Business Management NATED course has Math. This is because Business involves finance and calculations. If you are someone who loves and enjoy Mathematics, this would be a good course choice for you. Students who also have an interest in Finance, Business or Management can study.

You study the three Certificate courses for 6 to 18 months. These focus on equipping you with theoretical knowledge. Once you have completed this, you can do 18 months of work experience to receive the Marketing Management: NATED N6 National Diploma. 

Once you have finished the entire course, you will have four accredited qualifications and 18 months of work experience. You can use this to apply for a Marketing Manager position. Employers will value you applying with a Diploma Qualification and work experience.

It depends on the company that is hiring. Some companies require that you have a qualification of 1 to 3 years while other companies require a qualification of 3 to 5 years. Our Marketing Management Programme takes 6 to 36 months to study. This is because you are equipped with both theoretical and practical knowledge. No, you cannot teach Grade 3 with an Educare NATED N6 National Diploma. You need a Degree in Foundation Phase (Grade R to 3) Teaching to be able to teach Grade 3. However, you can use the Educare NATED N6 National Diploma to become an Assistant Grade R Teacher.

Legal Secretary Courses

No, a Legal Secretary is not a Lawyer. A Legal Secretary is a professional who assists Lawyers with their daily duties. They assist with administrative and secretarial duties.

The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) oversees the duties of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Our NATED courses are registered with SAQA. This gives our courses recognition in the NQF system. This means when you have completed a NATED course, you gain a qualification that will allow you to further your studies or look for employment anywhere in South Africa.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is a professional body. They do the following:

No, you cannot apply to a university with a NATED Qualification. You need a Matric Bachelor’s pass to apply to university. Your acceptance depends on whether you meet the requirements of the university and the course you wish to study.

NATED Qualifications are not equivalent to any other courses. This is because NATED courses are designed by the DHET for a specific reason. This makes NATED courses unique. Equivalent courses are those that have the same learning processes and outcomes. NATED courses are not equivalent to other courses because they have different learning processes and outcomes.
