Past Papers

Past papers are a great way to start working on your essay skills for your history exam. History papers consist of a few short questions and then 2 or more essay-based questions. This means that you really have to know your work in order to pass.

Practising your essay writing will undoubtedly prepare you for the writing of the exam and help you gain all the knowledge you may need for the shorter questions. The more essay topics you write, the more you’ll know about the subject matter!

Making Guidelines

Another great way to prepare for your history exam is to study the marking guidelines. If you know how the examiner is going to mark the short questions or essays, you’ll know what you need to write in order to get the marks.

This will also help train your overall essay writing in the process! A good, factual essay will give you a good final mark. Practise doing essays whenever you can and have your teacher mark them and show you what you’re doing wrong.

Here are some marking guidelines from the 2017-2019 IEB history exams.

Tips and tricks to pass history

History can be a tricky subject at first. There is so much to learn! Theory, application and all the essay writing. If, however, you manage to get the hang of it, it’ll be easy to get the marks!

Here are some tips to help you pass your history exam:

  • Practise your essays: A fundamental part of history exams are the essays at the end. You really have to know how to write a good essay in order to pass your final exam! The only way you can do this is through practising. Write on different study topics to ensure that you have enough knowledge to write an entire essay! This way you’ll also prepare yourself for the short questions.
  • Use PEEL: PEEL is the best way to make it through your history essays. PEEL stands for Point, Evidence, Explain, Link and it should apply to each paragraph of your essay and the essay as a whole. While writing your essay, start each stanza with the point you need to make, then provide the needed evidence that supports your point or claim. After this, you must explain the relationship between the two and how it links back to the main essay question. PEEL, PEEL, PEEL!
  • Teach your friends: If you start teaching your friends the theory, you will notice the gaps in your own knowledge and know where to improve. It also gives them the opportunity to add in facts that you might have not known, and that could lead to extra marks!
  • Review your theory: Without knowing your theory, you can’t write an essay. No matter how good your essay writing is! Make sure that you know your dates and events perfectly before you go into the exam. Read through it every day and practise writing essays to see how much you really know on your own!
