What Is An N6 National Diploma?

A NATED N6 National Diploma is designed by the DHET to prepare students for the work environment by equipping them with both theoretical skills and knowledge.

How Does NATED Work?

NATED courses build on one another. This means that you study the courses from the first to the last. There are four (4) qualifications in every NATED Programme. These are : 

How NATED Courses Work

The NATED N6 National Diploma is the last qualification. You must first study the three Certificate courses, which focus on theoretical knowledge. They are made up of assessments. These are: 

  • Three (3) open book assignments for each subject in a Certificate course
    • You must receive a mark of 40% or higher to pass 
  • One (1) final exam set by the DHET in each subject in a Certificate course 
    • You must receive a mark of 50% or higher to pass 

Once you have completed the NATED N4 National Certificate, NATED N5 National Certificate and the NATED N6 National Certificate, you can then move forward to the NATED N6 National Diploma which focuses on practical knowledge. The NATED N6 National Diploma is not a course. It is a qualification. To receive this qualification, you must complete 18 months of work experience. You can complete this in the following way: 

  • Register on the iWIL website 
    • The iWIL website is designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training 
    • The purpose of the website is to help students find volunteer work where they can gain experience
  • Once you have registered, you will receive a job in a company at which you will complete your work experience 
  • We will send you a logbook that you must complete throughout your work experience
    • You do not have to apply for a logbook, we automatically send you one 
  • The manager of the business overseeing your work experience must sign off the logbook 
  • Send the logbook back to us, and we will send it to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) for approval 
  • Once the DHET has approved your logbook, they will send you your NATED N6 National Diploma

Who Qualifies For NATED?

You qualify to study for any NATED course at Matric College if you have a Matric Certificate or
Matric Equivalent Qualification. If you do not have a Matric Qualification, you can study the following courses to gain a Matric

Adult Matric

The Requirements For Adult Matric:

  • You must have at least a Grade 9 or equivalent qualification,
    • i.e.: Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Level 4
  • You have an incomplete Matric 
  • You must be able to read, write and understand English or Afrikaans 
  • You must be 21 years or older to write the exams 
  • You may sign up for the Adult Matric at the age of 19 years old, but you will only be able to write the Adult Matric exam once you are over 21

Once you have completed this course, you will be awarded a Matric Certificate. You can use this to apply for any of our NATED courses.

How Long Does It Take To Get A National N Diploma?

It takes 18 to 36 months to complete a NATED course. This is because it takes 6 to 18 months to complete the NATED N4 National Certificate, NATED N5 National Certificate and the NATED N6 National Certificate. It takes 18 months to complete the NATED N6 National Diploma.

What Can I Do After Studying A National N-Diploma?

You can find employment after a NATED N6 National Diploma. You will be able to find employment because of the qualities you have. These are: 

  • You have 18 months of work experience 
  • You have skills 
  • You are equipped with the necessary knowledge 
  • You will advance the company easily 
  • You will not be taught every work activities 
  • You will teach the company new skills 
  • Your qualifications are accredited by the DHET and the QCTO 
  • Your qualifications are SAQA registered 
  • You studied via distance learning which means you are independent, dedicated and responsible

Can I Go To University With N6?

No, you can not go to university with a NATED N6 National Diploma. You must have a Matric Bachelor’s Degree pass to go to university. Your acceptance depends on whether you meet the requirements for the course and university.

Is A National N Diploma Equivalent To A National Diploma?

No, the National N Diploma is not equivalent to a National Diploma. The National N Diploma is designed by the DHET with a unique purpose, while the National Diploma is designed by a college or university. The National N Diploma has unique learning processes and outcomes, which means it is not equivalent to a National Diploma.

What Level Is A National N Diploma?

A NATED N6 National Diploma is at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 5.
