As one of the top performing provinces, this is how the Western Cape fared between 2010 and 2020:

  • 2010: 77%
  • 2011: 83%
  • 2012: 83%

Western Cape Quality of Passes

The Western Cape had 51 663 candidates writing their matric finals in 2020. These candidates made up the following passes:

  • 43.8% Bachelor’s Degree Passes 
  • 24.1% Diploma Passes
  • 11.9% Higher Certificate Passes
  •  0% NSC Passes

The Western Cape has been able to keep its matriculant pass rate over 80% between the years 2016 and 2019. 

The Westen Cape has also managed to have the highest retention rate for grades 10 to 12 at over 60%.

2016

In 2016, the Western Cape saw an 88% matriculant pass rate. Western Cape shared first place with the Free State.

2017

In 2017, the Western Cape grabbed 3rd place with a 84% matric pass rate. Despite the decline, Western Cape remained an impressive 80 percentile pass rate. 

This year, the Western Cape managed to hold the highest student retention rate between grades 10 and 12 at 63%. No other province in South Africa managed to get much over 50%.

2018

Experiencing yet another decline, the Western Cape saw a matric pass rate of 83%. Up by 1% in 2017, the Western Cape’s matric pass rate seems to be proving a decreasing trend. 

The Western Cape saw a great rise in pass rate in their most underprivileged schools. These pass rates took a rise from 58% to 71%.

2019

The Western Cape pass rate dropped slightly with 1%. This gave the Western Cape a matric pass rate of 82%.

The Western Cape was the 4th performing province behind Free State, Gauteng and North West. 

2020

The third highest provincial matric average in 2020 was the Western Cape at 79%. The 2019 matric pass rate in the province was 82%.

Get your Matric Results from your School or Exam Centre

Your full Statement of Results will be available at your school or exam centre on 23 February 2021, but remember:

  1. Social distancing
  2. Wear a mask!
  3. Follow covid safety rules at your school

The IEB (Independent Examinations Board) Matric Exam results for the Matric Class of 2020 will be released on Friday, 19 February 2021.

How to get your Matric Results via SMS 2021: Western Cape

  • Step 1: Open a new SMS message on your phone
  • Step 2: Fill in your ID Number AND Exam Number as the message
  • Step 3: Both numbers must have 13 digits to be accepted
  • Step 4: Send the SMS to this number: 35658
  • Step 5: Note that the SMS will cost R3,00 (Free SMS does not apply)
  • Step 6: Your exam number and ID number will be checked – if you send incorrect numbers it won’t work
  • Step 7: You will get your results once they are made available on 23 February 2021

Newspapers Where You Can Find Your Matric Results

Finding your matric results in the newspaper is one of the most traditional ways of doing it. All you need to do is make sure that you have the correct paper.

2020 Matric Results Release

2020 Grade 12 exam results will be available at 12pm on Tuesday, 23 February 2021, at school and exam centres, and online here.

Options If You Are Unhappy With Your Results 

It might happen that you are not happy with your matric results. You have until the 26th of March 2021 to apply for re-marking, re-checking or viewing of your examination paper. 

To apply, you must fill in an application form for re-checking and re-marking. You will be able to find these forms at any District offices and your respective school. These application forms will also be made available at examinations centres where students wrote.

The fees are structures as follows:

  • Re-mark: R120
  • Re-check: R29 
  • Viewing: R234 

Please keep in mind that a viewing of the exam paper can only be done after a re-mark or a re-check. The applications for this close 7 days after the release of the respective re-mark or re-check. 

Any candidate that is from a non-paying school or who have been granted a concession on school fee payments do not have to pay for the remarking of rechecking. 

Withheld Results 

Examination irregularities will mean that your matric results will be withheld. You can either:

  • Contact your school or district office and ask why your results are being withheld. 

OR 

  • You can appeal in writing and apply to write the May/June examinations. 

Rewriting 

All students are given a second chance to write their matric exams in June 2021. This can be either because you want to improve your results or because you did not pass the first time. 

Students who were absent during the combined November examinations can also write at this time. Applications close on the 26th of March 2021.
