Yes, your Matric Certificate can be reprinted—but only under certain conditions. Many people panic when they lose or damage theirs, or when they discover a mistake, but the good news is that Umalusi does allow reprints. The important part is knowing exactly when you qualify, because not every situation makes you eligible.

You can apply for a Matric Certificate reprint in the following cases:

  • If it is lost or damaged – If your Matric Certificate is lost or damaged, you can apply for your Matric Certificate to be reprinted.
  • If you are combining your results – If you wrote Matric in more than one examination sitting, and you want to combine your results to qualify for an Amended Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • Administrative errors – Your Matric Certificate can be reprinted if there is sufficient evidence of an administrative error. This should be within the first six months after the Certificate has been issued. Administrative errors can be the following:
    • Subject mark
    • Subject choice
    • Personal details
    • Registration error by the school or department
  • Alteration of sex description and sex status – If the Department of Home Affairs has granted an application in terms of the Alteration of Sex Description and Sex Status Act, and a person’s sex description has been altered accordingly, the person may make an application for a Matric Certificate reprint.

A Detailed Sworn Statement (Affidavit)

The signing of the affidavit is a crucial step that must be followed to achieve your Matric Certificate. Without an official signature, the affidavit cannot be used by the Department of Basic Education or the Provincial Education Department. This can be done at the police station or a lawyer’s office, since an official Notary (an attorney authorised by the High Court to witness signatures)  must sign.

After that, you and your witness will also need to sign. Make sure you bring along a document of identification. If there is no identification, the Notary will not sign your affidavit.

It is important to know that affidavits expire. After a year of it being signed, you can not use the affidavit any more.  Make sure that you use your affidavit soon after it is signed for it to still be valid.

If any part of the affidavit is false or untrue, you could face legal action.  Make sure to always tell the truth when under oath.

Your future shouldn’t be paused because of lost or damaged paperwork. Get your affidavit signed and certified copies ready, you’re closer than you think

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) is the qualification most learners earn after completing Grade 12 at school. It’s the standard Matric Certificate for school leavers.

The Senior Certificate (SC), sometimes called the “Adult Matric,” is for adults who are 21 or older and want to complete or upgrade their Matric. While both are issued by Umalusi and nationally recognised, the NSC is for school learners, and the SC is designed for adult students.
