The Eastern Cape has not been one of the top provinces when it comes to their matric pass rates. The province had a steady pass rate of 60% over the last few years but saw an improvement in 2018 and 2019.

The top performing district in Eastern Cape for 2019 is Nelson Mandela Metro, with a pass rate of 81.4%.
Having 8002 candidates in the district who wrote the matric exam, 6512 candidates achieved their matric certificates.
The second highest performing district i n Eastern Cape is Buffalo City with a matric pass rate of 77.9%. 7306 candidates in Buffalo City wrote the matric exams. 5694 candidates were able to achieve their matric certificates.
OR Tambo Coastal
The OR Tambo Coastal district achieved a matric pass rate of 77.6%, sharing third place with Alfred Nzo East district.
6899 candidates in the district wrote their matric exams, while 5356 students achieved their matric certificates.

Sharing the same percentage pass rate with the OR Tambo Coastal district, 3653 candidates in Alfred Nzo East sat in for the matric exams. Out of the 3653 candidates who wrote the exam, 2835 candidates achieved their matric certificates.

Eastern Cape is one of the provinces that achieved the highest improvements as the national matric pass rate increased to a record of 81.3% in 2019.
Even though the Eastern Cape is in the bottom three, alongside Northern Cape and Limpopo, the Eastern Cape has achieved a huge improvement from the previous years.
The matric pass rate for Eastern Cape increased by 5.9%, Landing the province at 76.5%.
