It is possible to lose or damage your Matric Certificate. If this happens, you can apply for a replacement of the certificate through the Department of Basic Education. Here is how you can get a new Matric Certificate.
You can apply for the replacement of your Matric Certificate through the Department of Basic Education (DBE) or Provincial Education Department (PDE) offices. They will ask you to fill out a form and submit it with all your other documents. These are the documents they require:
- An affidavit that explains what happened to your lost or damaged Certificate
- The original certificate (not applicable if the certificate is lost)
- The original ID book
- A certified copy of your ID
You can also apply online through the new official Umalusi application portal. You will need the same documents,scanned into digital format so you can upload them.
You will need to go into the portal, create an account, and select which certificate you need to replace. Once you have done this, you will need to select whether you would like to collect the certificate yourself from the offocial Umalusi offices in Pretoria, or have the certificate couriered to you.
If you choose to collect the certificate yourself, it will cost R137,00. If you choose to have it courierred to you, it will cost R202,00.
Note that these fees are only valid for the financial year of 2022 – 2023. They will be subject to change in the new financial year.
How Can I Get My Matric Certificate Online?
If you want to complete the replacement of your Matric Certificate process online, you can do it this way:
- Register on the (www.eservices.gov.za)
- Click on this link to download the form
- Fill in the form
- Attach your required documents with the form
- An affidavit that explains what happened to your lost or damaged Certificate
- The original Matric Certificate (not applicable if the certificate is lost)
- The original ID book
- A certified copy of your ID
- Attach your proof of payment here (you can find the bank details in the form you downloaded online)
- Send these documents to this address (Private Bag X895, Pretoria, 0001)

No, you can not buy a Matric Qualification. Buying any form of qualification is illegal in South Africa. You must study to get awarded a Qualification. If you want to do your Matric, you can do it in high school, distance learning college or through a TVET college.

How Do I Pass Matric?
You pass your Matric by studying hard and completing all your Matric assessments. You can pass if you obtain one of the following Matric Pass Levels:
To receive the above pass levels, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree Pass Level
- A minimum of 40% in your home language
- A minimum of 50% in four subjects
- A minimum of 30% in two other subjects
Diploma Pass Level
- A minimum of 40% in your home language
- A minimum of 40% in four subjects
- A minimum of 30% in two other subjects
Higher Certificate Pass Level
- A minimum of 40% in your home language
- A minimum of 40% in two subjects
- A minimum of 30% in four other subjects
National Senior Certificate Pass Level
- A minimum of 40% in your home language
- A minimum of 30% in two other subjects
- A minimum of 30% in three subjects
- One subject can be failed
If you want to study at university, you must pass Matric with a Bachelor’s Degree Pass. Your acceptance will however depend on whether you meet the minimum requirements set by the university.
