Today, the 2020 matric results were released as follows:

Top Performing Provinces

Across South Africa, the following provinces came out on top:

  1. Free State
  2. Gauteng 
  3. Western Cape

Free State

As the top-performing province in 2020, the matric pass rate in the Free State was 85%. This is only a 3% drop from their 88% pass rate last year. 

Gauteng

Gauteng managed to score second place in their provincial matric pass rate. Their 2020 matric pass rate was 84%, which was 3% lower than in 2019. 

Western Cape

The third highest provincial matric average in 2020 was the Western Cape at 80%. The 2019 matric pass rate in the province was 82%.

Other Provinces

Whilst the rest of the 9 provinces did not have matric results over 79%, they still performed well under the circumstances.

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape managed to score a matric pass rate of 66% in 2020. This was a big drop from their 77% matric pass rate in 2019.

North West

The 2019 matric pass rate was 87%. Their matric pass rate in 2020 dropped to 76%. Despite the large difference, it was still a notable achievement with the COVID-19 circumstances. 

Limpopo

The matric pass rate in 2020 for Limpopo was 68%. This is down from the 73% that they scored last year which was their highest score in over 10 years.

Mpumalanga

For the Mpumalanga class of 2020, the matric pass rate was 74%. This is 6% lower than the 80% that they scored in 2019.

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape saw a matric pass rate of 68% for the 2020 academic year. This is down from the 77% that they achieved in 2019.

KwaZulu-Natal

The KwaZulu-Natal class of 2020 saw a pass rate of 78%. This was a decline from the 81% matric pass rate that they received in 2019.

How to check your matric results on the Department of Basic Education Website

Students will be able to access their matric results 2020 online. This will take place on various platforms. To access the 2020 matric results on the Department of Education’s website, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Visit the Department of Basic Education website.
  • Step 2: Register using your details. (Please note you can only register for matric results until February 22nd the day before the marks are released). 
  • Step 3: Click on the link for 2020 NSC exam results. 
  • Step 4: Enter your examination number. 
  • Step 5: Your results will appear on the screen. 
  • Step 6: Click the download button and print.

How to get your matric results via SMS – Matric Class of 2020

  • Step 1: Open a new SMS message on your phone
  • Step 2: Fill in your Exam Number as the message
  • Step 3: Send the SMS to this number: 45856
  • Step 4: Note that the SMS will cost R3,00 (Free SMS does not apply)
  • Step 5: Your exam number will be checked – if you send an incorrect exam number it won’t work
  • Step 6: You will get your results once they are made available on 23 February 2021
