Due to the effect of a global pandemic, the Department of Basic Education had to make adjustments to the 2020 matric rewrites.

Matric exam rewrites postponed

Department of Basic Education postpones May/June matric rewrite exams

Due to COVID-19, the Department of Basic Education postponed the 2020 May/June matric exam rewrites.

These exams are amended senior certificate (old matric) and national senior certificate examinations, these exams were meant to be written by more than 350,000 part-time students, including those who failed the 2019 final exams.

The combined exams will be written from 5 November to 15 December 2020. Here is the November exam timetable

When can I apply for a matric rewrite?

Both online and manual registrations for the 2020 exam rewrite closed on 31 January 2020.

Where can I apply for a matric rewrite?

You can rewrite your matric through Matric college. To qualify to rewrite your exams, you have to be over the age of 21. You also have to have your grade 9 or a grade 9 equivalent qualification.

Register to rewrite matric subjects(Second Chance Matric Programme)

The Department of Basic Education has created a programme called the Second Chance Programme. The Second Chance Programme was designed to support learners who want to rewrite their matric subjects.

This programme is not restricted to students who failed matric. Support is also provided to part-time and supplementary learners. The second chance programme gives learners the chance to rewrite their matric exams.
