November 2023 matric results are out! Now that you have written your Matric, it is obvious that you are waiting for your results. There are a number of ways in which you can get your Matric results.

The November 2023 matric results have landed! Beyond just scores, this article sheds light on how they’re evaluated, the distinct pass levels, and where past results can be found.

Department Of Basic Education Website

Here is one way that you can check your Matric results. Here are the steps that you will need to take:

Step 1: Visit the Department of Basic Education website

Step 2: Enter your examination number

Step 3: Fill in your personal details

Step 4: Click on “Search”

Step 5: Your Matric results will be displayed

It is important to have the knowledge of where to find Matric results when you need them. There are a number of sources that can provide you with your Matric results. Here are some of them:

  • Online publications
  • Mobile devices
  • Department of Education
  • School or exam centres

Online Publications

You can access your Matric results from publications that publish them for the benefit of all concerned. Here are the publications that are known to publish Matric results:

Here are the three mobile device services that you can use:

  • Short Messaging Service (SMS) 
  • Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) 
  • MatricsMate App 

Short Messaging Service (SMS)

By using the Short Messaging Service (SMS) you can also access your Matric results. Here is what you do:

Step 1: Open a new SMS message on your phone

Step 2: Fill in your Exam Number as the message

Step 3: It must have 13 digits to be accepted

Step 4: Send the SMS to this number: 45856

Step 5: Your exam number will be checked 

Step 6: View your results

NOTE: You will be charged (airtime will be deducted) R1.50 per minute spent while you follow the prompts.

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) 

When you want to access your Matric results, you can also do it by using USSD. Follow these simple steps: 

  1. On your phone, dial the USSD code *120*45856# 
  2. Enter your exam number
  3. Results will then be sent to your phone once they are available
  4. You will be charged for the USSD

MatricsMate App

By downloading the MatricsMate App you can also be able to access your Matric results. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Download the MatricsMate App for free from Google Play and Apple App stores
  2. Open the App
  3. Enter the following details:
    • ID number
    • Exam number
  4. View your results

Department Of Education

You can also contact your district or provincial education provincial offices. Here are the contact details for the provincial offices: 

School Or Exam Centre

You can also collect your results from the school or exam centre where you wrote your exams. You will be issued a Statement of Results (SoR).

How Do I Get Old Matric Results?

If you have lost or damaged your old Matric Certificate, it is possible to replace it. Here are the two ways that you can use to replace your Certificate: 

  • Online
  • In-person 

Online

Here are the steps that you will need to follow:

  1. First, register as a user either on the DBE website (www.eservices.gov.za), or on the Umalusi application portal
  2. When you have registered, log in
  3. Fill in the details required
  4. Upload the following documents in digital format:
    • An affidavit stating what happened to your Matric Certificate
    • The original Matric Certificate, if it is damaged 
    • A certified copy of your identity document (ID)
    • Proof of payment

The price will vary depending on certain conditions. If you apply through the DBE, it will cost R155,00. If you apply through Umalusi, you will have a choice to either fetch the certificate yourself from the Umalusi offices in Pretoria, which will cost R137,00, or to have the certificate couriered to you, which will cost R202,00.

Note all fees listed are valid only for the 2023 – 2024 financial year, after which they will be subject to change.

In-person

Here are the steps that you will need to follow:

  1. Go to your nearest Department of Basic Education provincial or district office and fill in the application form
  2. Attach the following documents:
    • A Certified copy of ID
    • A detailed sworn statement (affidavit) if you have lost your Certificate
    • Proof of payment

How Are Traditional Matric Results Calculated?

Traditional Matric results are divided as follows: 

  • School-Based Assessments (SBA)
  • Final Examinations

School-Based Assessments

School-Based Assessments account for 25% percent of the marks. This represents all tests, projects, assignments, that were performed prior to the final examinations over the course of the first three quarters of the year.

Final Examinations

The 75% represents the final year examination marks for each subject written to make up 100%.

What Are The Matric Pass Requirements?

There are four categories of Matric Pass Levels:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree Pass
  2. Diploma Pass
  3. Higher Certificate Pass
  4. National Senior Certificate Pass

Bachelor’s Degree Pass

This is the highest level of a pass in Matric. With this pass, you can be admitted to study for a Bachelor’s Degree at a University. For you to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree Pass, you need to obtain the following minimum passes:

  • A minimum of 40% in your Home Language 
  • A minimum of 50% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects

Diploma Pass

This is the second level of a pass in Matric. With this pass, you can be admitted to study for a Diploma course at an institution of higher learning. For you to obtain a Diploma Pass, you need to obtain the following minimum passes:

  • A minimum of 40% in your Home Language 
  • A minimum of 40% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 

Higher Certificate Pass

This is the third level of a pass in Matric. With this pass, you can be admitted to study for a Higher Certificate at an institution of higher learning. For you to obtain a Higher Certificate  Pass, you need to obtain the following minimum passes:

  • A minimum of 40% in your Home Language 
  • A minimum of 40% in two subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in four other subjects

National Senior Certificate Pass

This is an ordinary pass in Matric. With this pass, you can be admitted to study any course that only requires a pass in Matric. For you to obtain a National Senior Certificate Pass, you need to obtain the following minimum passes:

  • A minimum of 40% in your Home Language 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in three subjects 
  • You can fail one subject

Where Can I Study If I Failed Matric?
