For the 2022 academic year, the Western Cape’s combined Matric Exam pass rate was 81.4%. It remained more or less the same from the previous year, increasing by only 0.2%.

Matric Exam Results 2021

The 2021 Matric Exam Pass Rate in the Western Cape was 81%. There was a 1% increase from 2020.

Matric Exam Results 2020

Although the COVID-19 Pandemic and the lockdown affected schools and learners across South Africa, The Western Cape Matric Exam Pass Rate in 2020 was still at an astonishing 80%.

Matric Exam Results 2019

The 2019 Matric Exam Pass Rate in the Western Cape was 82%.

The top-performing District in Western Cape for 2019 is the Metro North District with a pass rate of 86.3%.

Matric Exam Results 2018

The Matric Exam Pass Rate in the Western Cape in 2018 was 83%.

Experiencing yet another decline, the Western Cape saw a matric pass rate of 83%. Up by 1% in 2017, the Western Cape’s Matric pass rate seems to be proving a decreasing trend. 

There was a substantial improvement in the Matric pass rate in most underprivileged schools in the Western Cape. It increased from 58% to 71%.

Matric Exam Results 2017

The 2017 Matric Exam Pass Rate in the Western Cape was 84%.

There were no Matric Exam paper leaks confirmed by the Department of Basic Education and Umalusi, but some exam irregularities were reported. You can read more about it on the News24 website.

Matric Exam Results 2016

In 2016, the Matric pass rate of the Western Cape was the highest in South Africa. At 88%, the Western Cape shared first place with the Free State.

What Is The Current Matric Pass Rate In The Western Cape?

The Western Cape’s current Matric pass rate for the Matric Class of 2022 (results released in January 2023) is 81.4%. Matric Pass rates in the Western Cape have been above 80% since 2016.

The Western Cape has the 4th highest pass rate of all the provinces in South Africa, and is no longer in the top three. The third position was taken by KwaZulu Natal in 2022.

Where Can I Find My Matric Results?

There are a number of places where you can find your Matric Exam Results in the Western Cape. These are:

At Your High School

On the day that your Matric Results are released, you will be able to collect an official printed copy of it (Statement of Results) from your High School.

SMS

To get your Matric Results, you can SMS your examination number to 45856. Each SMS costs R3. You will receive an SMS with your results as soon as they are released.

You can find your results on your cellphone by dialling *120*45856# to register via USSD. You will receive an SMS with a link that will redirect you to where you can see your results.

Are Matriculants Passing Well?

No, Matriculants are not passing well. Although the Matric Pass rate is high, we cannot ignore the fact that there are still learning gaps between students of different backgrounds. 

Not all Matriculants are passing with quality passes that enable them to further their studies or have access to the post-Matric opportunities available.

How Will I Know If I Passed?

You will know if you passed by looking at your results. Here are the Matric Pass Levels:

If you achieve a National Senior Certificate Pass or higher, you have passed Matric. Below are the National Senior Certificate pass requirements:

  • 40% in your home language
  • 30% in two other subjects
  • 30% in three subjects
  • You can fail one subject

What Can I Do If I Did Not Pass Matric?

If you did not pass Matric, you can do one of the following:

Rewrite Matric

Rewriting Matric is a great idea for students who have not passed Matric. They have a chance to study again and rewrite the subjects that they did not do well on the first try.
