Build a Matric Certificate or improve an existing one through one of three Matric College courses, each suited to a different starting point:
- Adult Matric Course (SC(A)) — for adults who didn’t complete Matric at school
- Matric Rewrite Course — for rewriting specific failed subjects
- Matric Upgrade Course — for improving marks on subjects already passed
What each course covers, who qualifies for it, and how the exam routes differ is the rest of what this page covers.
Adult Matric Course
To enrol for the Adult Matric Course, you must be 21 years or older. The course is for students who do not have Matric.
In the course, you study six (6) Matric subjects. For each subject, there is a final examination. This is the only assessment you find in the course. It counts as 100% towards your final marks.
To pass the exam, you must receive at least 30%. This means, for all six subjects, you must pass with at least 30% or higher marks to pass the Adult Matric Course.
In the case that you fail one subject, you can still pass the course. This is a policy that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) provided for students doing Matric.
This is only possible if the subject you fail is not your Home Language. However, if you fail two or more subjects, you fail the course.
When you finish studying the Adult Matric Course, you will receive a Matric Certificate.
Matric Rewrite Course
To enrol for the Matric Rewrite Course, you can be of any age. This course is for students who failed Matric. In the course, you will have a chance to choose the Matric subjects you want to rewrite. This can only be a minimum of four (4) subjects.
If you do not want to rewrite the subjects you have, you also have a chance to choose new subjects. This means you can change subjects in Matric with a new set.. However, it can only be a minimum of four subjects. This is only possible if you have passed Matric.
To rewrite these subjects, you will have to write an exam. The exam counts as 100% in your final marks.
In all your Matric subjects, you must aim to reach at least 50% so that you can pass the course. When you pass the Matric Rewrite Course, you will be awarded a Matric Qualification.
