IEB music is a beautiful subject for many creative students. Paired with both a practical and theoretical exam, music tests both the factual knowledge and the skill of each learner. 

Matric College has put together this cheat sheet to help you pass your IEB Music exam with flying colours. 

Past Papers

Most of the IEB music examinations papers have a lot to do with music theory. This includes writing out musical notes, understanding elements of musical comparison and having a good ear, in general, to be able to get a good mark. 

The best way to practise all of these skills is through the use of part papers. With past papers, you’ll get better at applying your knowledge in different styles of questions.

Marking guidelines are a great way for you to become more proficient when it comes to answering questions. If you learn to answer questions in a way that the marker has intended, you’re more likely to get the marks!

Tips and tricks for passing IEB Music

Sometimes passing your exams can be a tricky thing to do alone. Luckily, Matric College is offering these tips and tricks to help you ace your IEB Music exam:

  • Know your theory: Yes, obviously the theory exam is all about the theory. You have to know your theory very well to be able to get a good mark. Take some time each day to practise your music theory! 
  • Practice your application: A lot of the questions you’re going to encounter will be application-based. You can practise your applications skills by doing past papers to help you get used to those unexpected questions.
  • Read the questions carefully: Sometimes when we rush through exams, we mistakenly read the questions incorrectly. Incorrect questions mean incorrect answers. Make sure you read through the question paper properly to get a good mark.
  • Study groups: Study groups are a great way to pick up on the information you may have missed. It’s also a great way for you to explain your work out loud to see if you truly understand it. 
  • Believe you can: The first step to success is knowing you can and you’re half way there.
