  • Stay flexible
  • Network
  • Get support
  • Be good to yourself

Know your values

Values are the core principles that run your life. The first place to start in building your career is to look within yourself.

Have a clear understanding of your values, this will allow you to choose a career path that is in line with your core principles.

Play to your strengths

Draw up a list of your top strengths and weaknesses. When you are in the process of deciding which career to choose make sure that you focus on your strong points.

Playing by your strengths will allow you to choose a career that you will succeed at.

Live your passions

For many people, their passions are buried and forgotten because of the belief that passion is not good enough to produce a career.

If you are in this position, it is important to know that a career can be built from almost anything, you just need the right tools and the right strategy!

Use your skill sets

Ask yourself, are you good at doing?

The answer to this question will allow you to identify what your skills are.

It is important to remember that being good at something does not necessarily mean you will enjoy it.

Figure out how much money you need to make

As a high school student, the topic of planning your finances might not be very common. It is very important to teach yourself about dealing with money while you are still young.

When you enter the job market, you will have to take a long hard look at your finances and create a budget. Decide on what kind of lifestyle is really important to you.

Then think about how much money you need to make to support yourself in that lifestyle.

If you can not do this on your own, get someone to advise you.

Have a plan

Do some research into different career paths that combine your values, strengths, passions and favorite skills sets. You also need to look at the career that provides you with the money that you need to make.

Imagine yourself in those careers. As yourself the following questions;

  • What will you be doing all day?
  • Who will you be working with?
  • What do you want to accomplish?

Once you have asked yourself these questions, go out and find out more about these areas. Draw up a plan for your career search and set goals for yourself.

Stay flexible

There are probably a number of different areas that you could see yourself working in. Experiment and see what you like best!

You could volunteer at a local non-profit or join a committee. There are a number of options to explore!

Networking is a critical piece of career success. Think of networking as connecting with another person so that the two of you are relevant to each other.

Get support

Make sure you surround yourself with positive people who want to see you succeed. Surround yourself with people who share the same goals and values as you do.

Be good to yourself

Try your best to have positive thoughts at all times. Do not over work yourself and make sure that you take care of your mental health and your overall wellbeing at all times.
