How To Start Building Your Career In High School

You can build a successful career by passing Matric and studying for courses that will help you gain skills and knowledge that are valuable to employers.

You can build your career in High School by doing the following: 

  • Choose the right subjects 
  • Career opportunities 
  • Good grades 
  • University or college 
  • Employment 
  • Business

Choose The Right Subjects

When you are in High School, you have a chance to choose any subjects you want to do. You can choose the subjects that match the career you want to pursue. To select subjects, you must look at the following: 

  • Abilities 
  • Career Goals 
  • Interests

Abilities

Choose subjects that you will be able to handle. For example, if you are someone who is excellent with calculations, it would be a good idea to study Mathematics as a subject. 

Career Goals

You have career goals that you want to reach. If your goals are to become a Doctor, you should study subjects such as:

  • Mathematics
  • Life Sciences 
  • Physical Sciences 

These subjects will make it easy for you to study at university.

Interests

Your interests are very important in subject selection. If you choose subjects, you have no interest in, it will be hard to pass them. You will have no motivation to study. Choose subjects that you are interested in, and it will be easy to learn them and pass. 

Career Opportunities

You must look at career opportunities while you are still in High School. When you get to Grade 10, this is where you choose subjects that you want to study until Grade 12. These subjects shape your future career. 

For example, if you want to become a Geologist, you will have to choose subjects such as: 

  • Geography 
  • Mathematics 

These subjects will help you pursue your career at university, where you will pass and earn a qualification that you can use to work as a Geologist. However, when you look at career opportunities, you must not only look at the subjects, but you should ask yourself questions such as: 

  • Will I have many career opportunities with this career choice? 
  • Will I easily find employment? 
  • Is my career choice in demand? 
  • Will my career still be important after five years?

The type of career you chose must answer yes to all these questions. This is how you start building your career in school, by doing research. 

Good Grades

To build a successful career in High School, you must earn good grades. To do this, you must pass Matric with certain marks. Here are the Matric Pass Levels you can obtain to pass Matric

Bachelor’s Degree Pass Level

These are the requirements you must meet: 

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 50% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects

Diploma Pass Level

These are the requirements you must meet: 

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 40% in four subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in two other subjects

Higher Certificate Pass Level

These are the requirements you must meet: 

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 40% in two subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in four other subjects 

National Senior Certificate Pass Level

These are the requirements you must meet: 

  • A minimum of 40% in your home language 
  • A minimum of 40% in two other subjects 
  • A minimum of 30% in four other subjects 

We advise that you pass with a Bachelor’s Degree Pass. This is the highest pass level. When you have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass, you can gain access to university and study. However, note that your acceptance is dependent upon you meeting certain requirements set by the university. 

If you pass Matric with any of the above Matric Pass Levels, you can study at Matric College. We do not require that you have any specific pass level. You can your Matric Certificate with any pass. You can study for any of our courses with a Matric Certificate and build a successful career. 

University Or College

When you have completed your Matric, you can study at a college or university depending on your pass marks. At university, there are different courses you can study. If you have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass, you may qualify to study the following at university: 

  • Degree Courses
  • Diploma Courses 
  • Higher Certificate Courses 
  • Certificate Courses 

If you have a Diploma Pass, you may qualify for the following courses: 

  • Diploma Courses 
  • Higher Certificate Courses 
  • Certificate Courses 

You can qualify to study the following courses at Matric College with any Matric Pass Level: 

Employment

You can use the qualifications you received from college or university to find work. You will be able to find employment because you are skilled and knowledgeable. Your qualification will help employers to notice you, and this may get you employed. 

Business

You can use the qualifications you received from the college or university to open a business. This depends on the type of qualification you acquired. For example, if you did a Short Course or ICB Course from Matric College, you will be equipped to open a business. 

If you have a university qualification related to business, you will also be able to open a business because you have obtained knowledge or relevant skills for business. Starting a business is also another way to create a successful career. 

Do Grades Really Matter In High School?

Yes, grades really matter. It is important that you gain good grades. When you have good marks, you have various opportunities to study what you want. The most important grades are the Matric ones. This is the last class in High School. 

Matric grades determine whether you will be able to gain access to university or not. This is why you must study hard in Matric to pass with good marks. You can do the following to pass: 

  • Attend all classes 
  • Take notes 
  • Ask questions in class 
  • Study on a daily basis 
  • Use past exam papers to study 
  • Study with other learners and share ideas on topics 
  • Attend extra classes 
  • Find a tutor 
  • Prepare for exams 
  • Complete all class assessments 

What Should I Do After Grade 12?

After Matric, you can do the following depending on whether you passed or failed Matric:

Is It Better To Go Straight To College After High School?

The decision depends on what you want as an individual. You can go to a college or university. However, do note that to get into the university you must have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass and still need to meet other requirements set by the university.
