How to get a Senior Certificate as an adult?

To get a Senior Certificate as an adult, you can register online with an institution that offers adult matric like Matric College. Or, you could register on the Department of Education website. To register for the Adult Senior Certificate exams you will need;

  • A copy of your results
  • A certified ID copy 
  • Proof of residence 

Requirements for foreign candidates;

  • A copy of your results validated by the South African Qualifications Association.
  • Proof of residence 
  • A copy of your passport, visa or study permit

Who can write adult matric exams?

Adults who are 21 years or older may apply to write the exams for the Amended National Senior Certificate.

Applicants must have passed Grade 9 or Standard 7 to qualify. (To get accepted into the exam you will have to show your Grade 9 or Standard 7 school report.)


Applicants must have a General Education and Training Certificate(GETC), or a qualification at level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework(NQF).

How do I register for the exams?

To register, go to any district office with all your documents or register online. You can also register for your adult matric studies at Matric College. Matric College will then provide you with support and guidance in registering yourself for your exams.

Do universities accept adult matric?

Yes. Universities do accept adult matric. Depending on how you passed, you may apply for a diploma or a degree at university.

If you are certain that you would like to go to university, you must find out about the entrance requirements for the University and the specific degree you want to study; and choose your matric subjects wisely.

How to get a matric certificate fast

Some students want to split their studies into two or three years, this gives them more time to complete their studies successfully. However, you can do all your subjects in one year.

Once you have passed your adult matric, you will receive your certificate from Umalusi.

Is ABET 4 the same as matric?

No, ABET level 4 is not the same as matric. ABET stands for Adult Basic Education and Training. An ABET level 4 qualification is the same as grade 9 or standard 7. An ABET level 4 qualification is equivalent to an NQF level 1. It is comparable to Grade 9 or the old Grade 7.

So with an ABET Level 4 qualification you can gain entrance to the Adult Matric programme.
