You can get your Senior Certificate as an adult at Matric College. You can do this by studying one of the following courses:
Adult Matric Course
The Adult Matric Course is made for adult students who do not have Matric. You can study this course to obtain knowledge on different subjects of life. This knowledge comes from the subjects you learn in the course.
There are six subjects that you must study in the Adult Matric Course. To pass the subjects, you must get 50% or higher marks in your exam.
Please note that even if you write tests and assignments during this course, the assignments do not count towards your final marks. They are simply there to get you prepared for the exam.
In the six subjects you study, you will write a final exam for each one. You can pass five subjects and be considered to have passed the exam. You can also pass all six subjects and be considered to have passed the course. However, we advise you to pass all your subjects as it will help you get admission to the university.
You are awarded a Matric Qualification when you finished studying the Adult Matric Course. This qualification is valuable and can be used at colleges, universities and workplaces.
These are the requirements you must meet to enrol for the course:
- You passed Grade 9 and have evidence of your report OR
- You finished a Grade 9 equivalent course (i.e. an ABET Certificate) that had two official language subjects
- You are 21 or older when you write your exams
- You can apply as early as the age of 19 and begin studying
- You can read, write and understand English or Afrikaans
- You are able to study via distance learning
Upgrade Matric Course
The Upgrade Matric Course is made for students who have passed or failed Matric. This course is a second chance for people who have studied Matric but did not receive satisfactory results. You can study this course and improve your results.
In the Upgrade Matric Course, you can select new subjects. You can replace your old subjects with new ones. If you have always wanted to change subjects, this will be your chance. For example, you can select subjects that match the career you want to pursue.
Please note that you can only select a minimum of four (4) subjects. When you are studying this course, you will be given the following resources to help you study for the best marks:
Upon completion of the Upgrade Matric Course, you will receive a Matric Certificate. You can use this in your search for employment or further studies. To study the Upgrade Matric Course, you must meet these requirements:
- Failed Matric Certificate
- Passed Matric Certificate
- Incomplete Matric Certificate
- Statement of results
- An incomplete Matric result; OR
You must be 21 years old when you write your first exams next year in May

What Are The 3 Minimum Requirements For A Senior Certificate?
To pass your Adult Matric Course, you must receive one of the following Matric Pass Levels:
Requirements For A Bachelors Degree Pass
- 40% in your home language subject
- 50% in four other High Credit subjects
- 30% in one other subject
Requirements For A Diploma Pass
- 40% in your home language subject
- 40% in four other High Credit subjects
- 30% in one other subject
Requirements For A Higher Certificate Pass
- 40% in your home language subject
- 40% in two other subjects
- 30% in three other subjects
Requirements For A Senior Certificate (Amended) (SC(A)) Pass
- 40% in your home language subject
- 40% in two other subjects
- 30% of the remaining subjects
- Fail one subject by a maximum of 20%
To pass your Upgrade Matric Course, you need to obtain the following marks. This, however, depends on the number of subjects you choose to upgrade:

Can I Go To University With Senior Certificate?
Yes, you can go to university with a Senior Certificate. A Senior Certificate is a Matric Certificate, the only uniqueness is that you receive it by studying Matric through a college. Please note that to get into university, your Senior Certificate must be a Bachelor’s Degree Pass.
You will be accepted if you meet the requirements set by the university and the course you have applied for.
Why Should I Upgrade My Matric?
You should upgrade your Matric because this will give you better marks. You will have marks that can open many opportunities for your career, for example, you apply for a bursary which will fund all your studies at college or university.
