COSAS Calls for Private Schools to be Nationalised

COSAS called on the government to nationalise all private schools to end educational inequality.

COSAS also firmly believes that all schools need to remain shut all together as the virus affects both public and private school learners.

What You Need To Know

Here is everything you need to know about the latest COSAS involvement in private school reopenings:

  • Douglas Ngobeni spoke out against the reopening: The COSAS spokesperson spoke out about the reopening of private schools saying that the virus affects everybody. Private school students and teachers included. By returning to school, these members of staff and students will be at risk.
  • Private school readiness will be analysed: COSAS stated that they will be visiting private schools this week. If any are deemed to be unsafe or not in line with health regulations, the school will be closed.
  • Non-complying schools are profit-focused: COSAS also stated that any private school not adhering to health regulations is more concerned about profit than about the health of its students.
  • The public school still await reopening: With private schools reopening, public schools still have another week before they are reopened to students.
  • COSAS members were encouraged to send private school students home: In the first week of February, COSAS members were told to send home any students they saw in a uniform. They will however not interfere this week.
  • COSAS spoke out about the inequality between public and private schools: COSAS believes that many of the issues in the education sector arise for the inequality between private and public schools. It was stated that this difference creates “inequality and ignorance of democracy.”
  • COSAS calls DBE to nationalise private schools: COSAS believes that this inequality can only be corrected if the government will nationalise private schools. This means to create a single and circular education system.
