Advice for matric students

If you want to pass your Matric well, you must study daily, use past exam papers to prepare for the exam and aim for high marks in all your assessments.

Your Matric year is one of the most important phases in life. You must do well in this class, to gain a Matric Qualification. This qualification will help you continue your studies at a college or university. You can also use it to look for entry-level employment. Here is advice on what you can do in Matric to pass: 

  • Study in time 
  • Complete all your assessments
  • Get ready for the exam 

Study In Time 

If you want to pass Matric, you must start preparing from the first day you attend class. When teachers are in class writing down information, you must take notes. You will need this when you study. 

Teachers are there to give you information on topics that will appear in your test, assignments and exams. If you have taken notes, you can easily find answers to different assessments. Doing well in your assessments makes you pass Matric. 

Complete All Your Assessments

In Matric, you have class assessments that you must complete before you write your final examination. The class assessments count for 25% of your final marks. These assessments include the following: 

  • Tests 
  • Assignments 
  • Oral presentations 
  • June exam
  • Trial exam 

You must do well in your class assessments. The marks you receive from these are used to add to the marks you receive in your final exam. This increases your chances of passing Matric with high marks. The more marks you have, the greater your chances of getting into university are.

Get Ready For The Exam 

Your Matric final exams are important. Passing these exams means that you gain a Matric Qualification. You can use this qualification to apply to university, college or work opportunities. Here is how you can get ready for your exam by doing the following: 

  • Study on a daily basis 
  • Instead of cramming, study to understand
  • Use Matric past exam papers to familiarise yourself with exam questions 
  • Study with other students to gain more knowledge

How Can I Do Well In Matric?

You can do well in your Matric by completing all the assessments that you are tasked with. You must put effort into each assessment. There is no assessment that is less important than the other. Below is a table to show you the assessments you must complete:

The class assessments contribute 25% in your final marks 

The external assessment (final exam) contributes 75% in your final marks  

The total marks you receive in the class assessment are used to boost your external assessments (final exam) marks 

The marks you receive in your external assessment are combined with the total marks in your class assessments and create your final marks 

Class assessments + external assessments = final Matric results 

Class assessments + external assessments = final Matric results 

How Do You Stay Motivated In Matric?

You can stay motivated in Matric by reminding yourself of the goals you have. If your goals are to further your studies at university or college, you will need good marks to gain admission. Remind yourself that you need to work hard in Matric to obtain good marks. 

Having good marks will help you in your goals to pursue your dream career. If you get good marks in Matric, you will have a better chance of getting into college or university.

What Are The 10 Qualities Of A Good Student?

Below is a list of the ten (10) qualities you need to become a good student in Matric

  1. Dress appropriately 
  2. Set career goals 
  3. Arrive to class on time 
  4. Do not miss class 
  5. Take notes in class 
  6. Ask questions when you need clarity 
  7. Listen attentively 
  8. Complete your homework 
  9. Complete all your assessments in time 
  10. Do well in the exam

How Many Hours Should A Matric Student Study?

A student in Matric should study for at least six (6) hours daily. Studying for long hours helps you get through most of your school work. You will not feel stressed when you have to write tests, assignments and exams because you have studied enough.

What To Do To Motivate Students?

If you want to motivate students in Matric, you can look for someone who is studying at the university to speak to them. They can explain what the students must do to pass Matric and gain admission to the university. This will motivate the students to study hard as they want to get into university.

How Can I Help My Child In Matric?

You can help your child in Matric by doing the following: 

  • Create a study place for them 
  • Tell them they can pass Matric 
  • Make sure they study daily 
  • Remind them to do their homework 
  • Ask if they need anything to study, e.g. study snacks, stationery

How Many Subjects Can You Fail In Matric?

You can only fail one subject if you are doing your Matric in High School. You study seven subjects and from these, you can pass six and be awarded a Matric Qualification. However, if you want the best marks, you should pass all seven subjects.

How Can I Pass Matric?

You can pass your Matric by meeting the minimum requirements for one of the Matric Pass Levels. If you obtain one of the following pass levels, you pass Matric: 

Bachelor’s Degree Pass Level 

At a minimum, you must have: 

  • 40% in your home language 
  • 50% in four subjects 
  • 30% in two other subjects 

Diploma Pass Level 

At a minimum, you must have: 

  • 40% in your home language 
  • 40% in four subjects 
  • 30% in two other subjects 

Higher Certificate Pass Level 

At a minimum, you must have: 

  • 40% in your home language 
  • 40% in two subjects 
  • 30% in four other subjects 

National Senior Certificate Pass Level 

At a minimum, you must have: 

  • 40% in your home language 
  • 30% in two other subjects 
  • 30% in three subjects 
  • You can fail one subject 

What Percentage Is A Distinction?

If you want to obtain a distinction pass in Matric, you must receive a mark of 80% and above. A distinction pass is good because it can help you into university and study for the course you want.

What Does “D” Stand For In Matric Results?

The symbol “D” in your Matric results symbolises that you have a mark between 50 to 59%. As a result, you have a better chance of getting into university with this mark. If you find your Matric results not satisfactory, you can improve them
