Accreditation

What Are The 2 Purposes Of Accreditation?

There are 2 purposes of accreditation. These are:
  1. Ensures that quality standards of a course or institution are met
  2. Improves different courses and institutions

Standards And Quality Are Met

Accreditation ensures that standards are met and that quality courses are offered. If standards are being met, then students will become successful professionals.

Improves Courses And Institutions

If a College or Course is accredited it means that the Course or College is meeting the quality standards. This ensures that students receive the best quality education and are kept up to date with educational content.

What Are The Benefits Of Being Accredited?

  • Quality education
  • Recognised
  • Career opportunities

Quality Education

Accredited courses offer broad information which gives you a lot of knowledge. This is important in your life as you will need knowledge for the following:
  • Work purposes
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Furthering your studies

Recognised

When you study an accreditation course, you study a qualification that is registered on the National Qualifications Framework and this makes it recognised. Your chances of finding employment or furthering your studies become easy.

Career Opportunities

Accredited qualifications are highly respected. You may gain a chance to follow different career opportunities because you hold a recognised qualification. Employers may also pay you more money because you have an accredited qualification.

How Do I Get Accredited?

These are the steps you can take to be accredited:

  1. If you are interested in being accredited as a provider of education and training, send a letter of intent to the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance ETQA

      • QCTO
      • DHET
      • Umalusi
      • ICB etc.

  2. Complete a self-evaluation and application form for ETQA
  3. You have the right to appeal if you do not receive accreditation and believe the process was unfair
  4. You can go on the SAQA website for more details for the list of ETQAs and contact details

Does Accredited Mean Qualified?

Accredited can mean that you have qualified to offer an education programme. This is for training providers or courses that have been submitted for accreditation. Proof of accreditation comes in a certificate that states when you have been granted the accreditation. The accreditation certification can last four to five years. Once it has expired, you can renew it.

Accredited can also mean having a qualification that is accredited and qualified to be in a work environment. Employers value accredited qualifications because they portray the following about you:

  • You have gained a quality education
  • You were taught by a professional
  • You are a hard worker
  • You have the necessary skills and knowledge
  • You will uplift the company

Our Accreditation

SAQA

The South African Qualifications Authority is a professional body that monitors and advances the role of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Our NATED, ICB and Matric courses are registered with the SAQA. This means that they are recognised in the South African NQF system. This secures your qualifications and you can further your studies or look for employment with your qualifications.

DHET

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is a professional body that accredits training providers and qualifications. The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) expects their training providers to be registered with DHET or the ICB.

ICB

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) is a professional body. They design and accredit courses. Our ICB accredited courses are accredited by ICB and QCTO. All ICB courses are recognised nationally and internationally. You can further your studies or look for employment inside and outside South Africa.

QCTO

The Quality Council of Trades And Occupations (QCTO) is a professional body that accredits occupational qualifications. The QCTO is a quality council and monitors qualifications to ensure they give quality education at all times. Our Bookkeeping and Accounting courses are accredited by the QCTO. This ensures that you gain a quality education that will make you stand out when you look for employment or further your studies.

NATED Courses

Yes, NATED courses are accredited by the DHET and the QCTO. Accreditation means that the course is registered with a professional body. This increases your chances of finding employment or furthering your studies.

Yes, NATED courses are recognised nationally. This is because all National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) courses are nationally recognised. This means you can use a NATED Qualification to look for employment or further your studies anywhere in South Africa.

A NATED Qualification is designed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The DHET designed this qualification to reduce the gap of employment for students.

This qualification trains students with skills and knowledge and prepares them for a working environment. This means students are educated to be easily employed.

NATED Certificates refer to the following Certificate courses:

  • NATED N4 National Certificate
  • NATED N5 National Certificate
  • NATED N6 National Certificate

These Certificate courses build on each other. This means you must first study the NATED N4 National Certificate and study your way up. These Certificate courses are found in each NATED course that we offer.

You qualify to study a NATED course at Matric College if you have a Matric Certificate or a Matric Equivalent Certificate. The Matric Certificate can be any of the following levels:

Note that you can use a Matric Certificate to apply for all of our NATED courses. You can also use a Matric Equivalent Certificate to apply for our NATED courses excluding the Legal Secretary and the Educare courses. You must have a Matric Certificate to study these two courses.

No, you cannot do NATED courses without Matric. You need a Matric Certificate to study. However, if you do not have a Matric Certificate, you can study these following courses and earn a Matric Certificate:

Adult Matric

The Requirements For Adult Matric:

  • You must have at least a Grade 9 or equivalent qualification,

NATED courses take a period of 18 to 36 months to complete. This is because NATED Certificate courses take about 6 to 18 months to complete while the NATED Diploma takes 18 months to complete. This makes a total of approximately 18 to 36 months.

Jan Badenhorst, CEO of Matric College, discusses everything you need to know about the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB)

  • Find employment
  • Study a different ICB Programme

Find Employment

You can use an ICB Qualification to find employment. You will be a suitable candidate applying with an accredited qualification.

Study A Different ICB Programme

ICB courses work interchangeably. Some ICB subjects are similar in different ICB Programmes.

For example, the ICB Office Administration and the ICB Financial Accounting Programme both have Bookkeeping to Trial Balance as a subject. This means if you are studying an ICB Office Administration course and decide to jump over to the ICB Financial Accounting Programme, you would not have to study the Bookkeeping to Trial Balance subject because you have studied it already. This makes switching from one ICB programme to another is easy.

Below is a table with the ICB Programmes and their subjects. The highlighted subjects are the ones that repeat themselves throughout the Programmes. If you move from one programme to another, you will only study the subjects that are not highlighted.

  • National Certificates
  • Higher Certificates
  • National Diplomas

Once you have completed an ICB Accredited course, you can choose to further your studies with Matric College. You can study a different ICB Programme or a NATED Qualification or a Short Course.

OR

You can further your studies through a body that recognises ICB Qualifications.

Short Courses

No, Short Courses are not accredited. These provider programmes are created by an institution themselves. They are not registered with a professional body.

If a course is not accredited, it is not connected to a professional body. What happens is that most people prefer to study accredited courses. When a course is not accredited, people tend to stay away from it. However, non-accredited courses are also beneficial. If you are someone who has gained a qualification that is not accredited, do not be alarmed. You can find employment with a qualification that is not accredited or use the skills you have acquired to advance yourself by opening a business and putting your skills to good use.

If a Degree qualification is not accredited, it is not connected to a professional body and does not meet a certain standard. There are also certain employees who will NOT employ you with a non-accredited Degree because they do not know if you acquired enough knowledge and skills. You can however use your non-accredited Degree Qualification to apply for employment opportunities that allow non-accredited qualifications.

Yes, a Short Course counts as a qualification. Every qualification counts. You can implement what you have learned in many areas of life. Short Courses are, for example, the improvement of personal skills and skills that can be utilised in a work environment. For example a First Aid Short Course. This course will equip you with skills that:

  • Prevent an injury from getting worse
  • Reduce recovery time
  • Save someone’s life
  • Help you stay cautious
  • Keep you and others safe

No, an unaccredited qualification is not bad. You can use this to grow a successful career. If you are someone who already has an accredited qualification, adding a non-accredited qualification to your CV would be good. Short Courses add to your skills. This increases your chances of finding employment.

Since an unaccredited qualification equips you with skills, you can use these to open a business. For example, if you studied a non-accredited course in Beauty, you can open a salon and put your skills into practice. A business is a great way to make money and you get to be your boss.

Here are the benefits of studying a short course:

  • Skills-based
  • Short study duration
  • Less academic pressure
  • Accessible entry requirements

Skills-based

A non-accredited course is skills-based. These qualifications focus on equipping you with specific skill sets. Skills are very important qualities to have. They can resolve issues, work efficiently and be upgraded into more skills. Employers value non-accredited courses for this reason. If they hire you, you will be able to do the work.

Short Study Duration

A non-accredited course is usually shorter than an accredited qualification. This is because there is less theory involved and more practical knowledge. This means you can save time and spend less on a course.

Less Academic Pressure

A non-accredited course offers no examinations. You can qualify without experiencing the pressure of an exam sitting. If you are not someone who generally likes to study a lot, you can study a non-accredited course (short course).

Accessible Entry Requirements

Non-accredited courses do not have complicated entry requirements. At Matric College, there are the simple requirements you need to have:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Be able to read, write and understand English
  • Be able to study through distance learning

The purpose of a Short Course is to provide you with specific skills. These skills help you be more advanced personally and academically. They are there to help you gain skills that can help you with the following:

  • Be able to apply for a promotion
  • Be eligible for employment
  • Become self-employed
  • Advance personal and social skills

Yes, you can find employment with a Short Course Certificate. This is because Short Course Certificates, to some employers, show your willingness to learn new skills. You are equipped for work and this helps you be a valuable candidate. However, a Short Course also means that you will not be able to apply for highly skilled positions in industries.

Short Courses are generally very short in duration. Our Short Courses at Matric College can be completed in a period of 2 to 12 months.
