Well done! You have completed your Matric. This symbolises that you have reached one of the most essential phases in your life. After Matric, you can begin a life filled with various opportunities. You can choose whether you want to study further or get employment.
What Certificate Do You Get After Matric?
When you pass Matric, you get a Matric Certificate from Umalusi which is a Quality Council that issues all Matric Qualifications in South Africa. The certificate you receive is also known as the National Senior Certificate.
Is Matric A Degree?
No, Matric is not a degree. Matric is the last class in High School, and it is also known as Grade 12. When you pass this class, you receive a Matric Certificate. The Matric Qualification you receive is not a degree, but a certificate qualification.
There are levels to passing Matric. This is from the highest to the lowest pass. There are four types of Matric Certificate Passes. You pass Matric if you have obtained one of these:
Requirements To Pass With A Bachelor’s Degree Pass Level
Must receive the following minimum marks:
- 40% in your home language
- 50% in four subjects
- 30% in two other subjects
Requirements To Pass With A Diploma Pass Level
Must receive the following minimum marks:
- 40% in your home language
- 40% in four subjects
- 30% in two other subjects
Requirements To Pass With A Higher Certificate Pass Level
Must receive the following minimum marks:
- 40% in your home language
- 40% in two subjects
- 30% in four other subjects
Requirements To Pass With A National Senior Certificate Pass Level
Must receive the following minimum marks:
- 40% in your home language
- 30% in two other subjects
- 30% in three subjects
- One subject can be failed
Do Universities Accept Diplomas?
Yes, a Matric Diploma Pass is accepted by some universities. However, they only accept you into Diploma, Higher Certificate and Certificate study programmes. If you want to study a Degree Course, you will need to have a Bachelor’s Degree Pass.
You can upgrade your Diploma into a Bachelor’s Degree Pass at Matric College. You must study hard to get this pass level. We will provide you with tutors, study material and past exam papers to help you study. These are the marks you must get to get a Bachelor’s Degree Pass:

Does A Matric Certificate Open Up Doors For Me?
Yes, a Matric Certificate does open up doors. When you have a Matric Qualification, you have opportunities such as the following:

- Acceptance at college or university
Obtaining A Bursary
A Matric Certificate can help you to gain admission into a bursary. In most cases, sponsors look for students who have just completed Matric and are about to study further at a college or university. They give you a bursary which funds things such as your tuition fees and accommodation.
When you have a bursary, you are able to save money for other important needs. You also study without the financial stress because your education has been paid for.
Getting An Internship
A Matric Certificate can help you get an entry-level internship. There are work opportunities that require you to only have a Matric Qualification. You can apply for these careers and start earning. These careers include the following:
- Receptionist
- Personal Assistant
- Student Support Administrator
- Waiter/Waitress
- Store Assistant
- Cashier
Acceptance At College Or University
A Matric Qualification can help you get into college or university. Please note that your Matric Certificate must be a Bachelor’s Degree Pass for you to gain admission to the university. You will be accepted if you meet the requirements met by the university and the course you have applied for.
To study at a college, you can use any of the Matric Certificate Passes. This can be a Diploma, Higher Certificate or National Senior Certificate Pass. You will be accepted if you meet the requirements set by the college and the course you have applied for.
You can use your Matric Certificate to study at Matric College for any of the courses we offer. We do not look at your APS Score. You can study as long as you have passed Matric.
What Happens After Receiving Matric Results?
When you have received your Matric results, you can decide what you want to do next. This may be based on the type of Matric Pass Level you have received. Below is a list of things you can do after Matric :
Upgrade Your Results
If you are not happy with your Matric results, you can improve them. To do this, you can apply for the Upgrade Matric Course offered at Matric College. You will have a chance to change subjects if you want to. A minimum of four subjects can be changed. When you finish the course, you will be awarded a Matric Certificate by Umalusi.
Take A Gap Year
You can take a gap year after Matric. This is a chance for you to take a break from your studies. You will have more time to spend with your friends and family. If you want to be more productive, you can do things such as the following:
- Learn a new skill
- Get involved in an organisation that contributes to the community
- Upgrade your Matric results
- Intern at a company
- Find entry level employment opportunities (e.g. retail, call centres)
Study Further
After receiving your results, you can study further. You can do this at a college or university. There are many institutions in South Africa where you can study. One of these includes Matric College. We do not require that you have specific Matric Pass Levels to study.
You can study as long as you have passed Matric. We also have other courses you can study without Matric.
What Can I Study With 20 Points?
If you have an APS Score of 20 points, You can enrol at Matric College for any of our courses. These are:
